possible CPS issues
The truck is a 2001 f250, 7.3 4wd, the only performance mods are a homemade intake, straight pipe exhaust and a TS performance 4 position chip
Anywho, I was driving to the gym the other day and my truck decided to shut off by itself. I coasted in to a parking spot and parked it.
Tried to restart a few times with no luck, waited about 5 min then it fired up, I then tried to drive back home so I could see what was up. Halfway there the truck dies again, this time no restart at all. Called a friend and he towed me home.
I pulled the CPS and saw that is is grey, its also the one that FORD installed per the recall letter i recieved. So I went to NAPA because it was the only place open and bought a new CPS which happened to be black. Installed the new CPS and still no start. Then i pulled out my chip and it fires right up.
I pulled codes with my Superchips tuner and got these
P0344- Camshaft Pos sensor circuit intermittent(bank1/1 Sens)
P0471- Exhaust Back pres sensor circuit Perf
p0603- Internal Ctrl KAM Error
It ran fine for a few days then last night it would seem to miss and the SES light came on. I got home and for grins I unhooked the batteries then put everything back together...no more SES light and no codes.
Today, reinstalled chip for grins and thre truck started and ran fine until late this afternoon. Pulled in to the gym turned truck off and worked out, came out later and it fired right up...then died...fired up again...got halfway home died again with no start. Pulled chip on the side of the road and the truck fires right up. Pulled codes and the only one is the 0603.
Any suggestions? I really dont want to have to take it it to the stealership.
I contacted TS and they said to send them the chip so they could check it out
And PS: Im a newb here on the 7.3 forum, is there a thread that has the common acronyms for parts listed?
Sorry about the long post guys.
The thing I noticed in your post is that you had trouble even with the chip removed. So that tells me that the problem is probably not the chip, but rather something else going on. Next time it lights up the SES, pull codes again and see what the new ones are. But this time, make sure you don't disconnect the batteries or pull the chip first. Every time you do that, you erase the codes. That's why you only got a P0603 the last time you pulled codes: you removed the chip, then tried to check for codes. Leave the chip in next time you scan.
Are the codes that i listed anything i should seriously be worried about?
Last night when the SES light came on it was raining and very humid, in fact is was the same way the night i started having problems, could the humidity have been an issue?
and i had installed the tow safe mode from my superchips tuner just for a laugh last night too. Went back to stock this morning and no issues until i reinstalled my TS chip.
Thanks for the quick response.
Some others have had water get into the CPS electrical connector and stall the truck. Some dielectric grease will take care of that issue.
As for the codes you listed, the only one that would present a stalling problem is the one for the CPS. The exhaust backpressure sensor won't cause the truck to stall, and the P0603 KAM error is caused by both the Superchips programmer and will also trigger when you remove power to the PCM, either by unhooking the batteries, or pulling the PCM to remove the chip.
Best bet is to see if the truck throws the SES light again, scan for codes, and see if the same codes pop up, or if you get something new.
It just seems to act up if I install any type of tuning, could this be a problem with my PCM?
I think that my chip is fried because i didnt feel any power difference between the chip and stock tuning.
The truck does seem a little sluggish when it rains and the humidity is high.
On a side note Im giving serious thought to switching to a DP tuner, I've heard nothing but good things.
Thanks again for the help.
Question though, could my problems be in the PCM if the TS chip and tuner are ok?
