How do I tell the difference between gas and diesel E4ODs or are they the same?? My truck is a 91 and I know up to 96 will work with very few mods (pigtail connector for the solenoid pack). I have someone with a good used one that I'm going to look at but want to make sure it's for a diesel and not gas.
The distance between the bell housing bolts is different on gas transmissions.
You could measure the bolts carefully center to center in both directions to make sure.
Is your transmission out of the truck?
I have an adapter plate up in my garage, I can measure the bolt patern if you need the measurements.
Dave I searched my manuals all morning but was unable to confirm a difference, I knew there was but did not want to commit without proof. Is the diesel and 7.5 gasser the same bell housing sizes....... I seem to remember something but having a senior moment.
As I remember the two top bolts line up.
But the lower four do not.
A while back I remember someone posting they had drilled out the holes in the bell housing to make it work.
Given the stories about the ZF case breaking and the torque converter bolts breaking, I don't think that would be a good option.
If the holes are just slightly off center from where thay need to be, the alignment differences would probably trash a torque converter in short order.
Any difference in a manual would probably be more forgiving, but at least for me extra holes mean a weaker housing.
As soon as I typed that, the input shaft would probably not like any misalignment either, so probably not a good idea for them either.
that was in a thread posted 11-18-2007 10:50 am by 1978fordf250 post by masterbevis has the 460 tin bolted to the trans you can see the difference in bolt pattern between the diesel and the gasser 460

Reason: wrong thread starter name
E4OD trans for 1989, 1990, 1991, will interchange in diesel trucks. Later years units have different output shaft that turns mechanical speedo and vehicle speed sensor for computor. I got 1993 trans and installed. Trans would not upshift properly. Changing output shaft labor the same as complete overhaul costs. Check with any salvage place for correct interchange. Frank in Idaho
Good catch, frank-id. You are 100% correct, although if he has a 4wd transmission, the transfer case would have the VSS so a newer MIGHT still work, but I think there could still be compatibility problems with the computer.
The other way to tell a diesel bellhousing from a gasser is the mating surface of the gas bellhousings are continuous all the way around, but the diesels have a cut out at the bottom for the steel access cover at the bell housing. Also, there are no provision for starter bolts on the transmission bellhousing since the adaptor plate (or starter ring as some call it) is what the starter bolts to.
it is easy to identify the difference between gas and diesel E4OD
gas has a 360 degree bellhousing by that i mean the face of the bell housing is flat the full 360 degrees of the peremeter and the diesel has the bottom of the housing recessed it is cut at about a 45 degree angle to the face of the bell housing
