My transmission downshifts from 3rd gear to second and then right back to third gear when low acceleration through town. upon heavy acceleration on highway,no downshifting effects..shifts regularly..
I have a 1990 F250 7.3 non turbo, I really don't know what kind of transmission, how can i find that out? I think it is a 4 speed auto with overdrive..
It is likely an E40D. I don't know anything about those, perhaps someone else will jump in.
I would also suggest searching this site (IDI) and the Transmission site for related threads.
Get or borrow or rent a OBD1 code reader and read the diagnostic codes from the transmission control computer. These will tell you the most likely problems you are having. It sounds harder than it actually is. Just follow the test instructions exactly step by step and you will be able to read the codes no problem.
note , anytime you perform a test on this vehicle with a code reader you must hold the throttle at the wide open setting before initializing the tester or you will recieve a false code for the fipl , (tp) sensor
example , a pass would be 11-10-11 if you do not hold the throttle open you will receive
a 23-10-11 the first number is for a hard fault code the 10 is the seperator code after that any code is a memory code so 23 -10- 43 would be a hard fault fipl seperator and a memory code for the fipl
I had the same problem with both of my trucks with different causes. My 93 shifting issue was a vehicle speed sensor, which is a cheap and easy fix. This problem also periodically causes the speedometer to be unstable. Speed sensor is available at Autozone. My 91 shifting issue was caused by the TPS (sensor which all above have mentioned) on the injection pump needing adjustment.
These are the only two issues externally which will cause the problem you mention.
