E4OD problem

We got this gearbox rebuilt 2 months ago, been working fine until now.
Just go an intermittent problem, when in drive, starts out good in first gear, then it jumps hard into second, then he starts to gear up and down in first and second gear.

By using the shifter, it will stay in first when selecting first and it will stay in second when selecting second gear.

Tach and speedometer seems to act normal.

We also been cleaning the electric connections on the gearbox.

Any suggestins?

Try a code scan to see if you get any codes first. Most likely code you might get is a Throttle Position Sensor Error.

Check your Throttle Position Sensor to make sure it does not have any dead spots in its range using a good ohm meter, or replace it right away, not very expensive. A dead spot could cause the kind of erratic shifting you are seeing as the transmission computer does not get the proper throttle position signal for shifting.

Sebastian.

To check the TP sensor probe the middle wire on the harness connecting the TP sensor with your red lead of your digital volt meter, black goes to battery ground. (Sorry I may have said Ohmmeter before, what you want is a DC voltmeter (scale 0-5 volt DC if possible)

With the ignition on and engine not running slowly move the throttle from closed to wide open. You should start at at about 1.1 Volt and go to about 4.0 Volt give or take 0.1 Volt. The most important thing you are looking for is any flat spots where the voltage suddenly drops or jumps. If that is the case the TP sensor needs replacing. If you get a smooth voltage increase from 1.1V to 4.0V then you are ok, just remember to move the throttle slowly and watch your voltmeter.

Seb...

Take it back to the shop that did the rebuild, and have them retorque the valve body attach bolts, check fluid level etc. should be warrranty work!!! As mentioned the adjustment of the FIPL is the most common fault, but also have the Manual postion lever indicator checked.

What year is the E4OD? If its older than 1992, the speed signal could be bad and the speedometer will still work fine.

I have a 91. I am working through a few problems myself. I would recomend checking the driven gear on the end of the speed sensor wich is on the end of the speedo cable. If that looks good check the driven gear in the tail of the tranny with a mirror. (I replaced both the drive gear was bad)

If its a 1991, then the VSS is one more thing to check. If the problem is intermittent, then then look for a loose or damaged connector.

Thanks all, we had to bad weather last night to get anything checked out, will try tonight.
We will check the TP sensor first, how can we detect if the VSS is damaged, ohm it?
Then check the gears on the speedo cable.
How do we check the Manual postion lever indicator? and where is it located?
The shop who did the rebuild is 10hrs away, will try out everything we can before we go to that step.
We will keep you updated.
Thanks

We checked the TD sensor, readings between 1,07 to 4,19 volts. We ohmed the sensor in the rear diff. reading was 1,35 kohm.
We took out the gear/sensor for the speedocable, we ohmed the sensor and we got 0,2 kohm. We put a battery drill on the end of the gear and we was turning while we was measuring the sensor, we got funny readings, they was fluxing between 0,2 to 6 or 8 kohm. We did several tests whit it between 0 to 400 rpm, and we never got a steady reading, always fluxing up and down. Maybe it is worth changing?
We also had a little test drive with the truck, and the problem is there all the time now, it will gear up, but it needs a lot of rpms. And it will gear up and down just hard.
It was mentioned the Manual Postion lever indicator, how do we check that one, and where is it located?
Thanks

I thoght my speedo was working right before I replaced the gears. It was doing the same crazy up down shifting. Then I had my wife pase me in her car and found it was anywhere from 5-10 off. The drive gear in the tail had the teeth worn down quite a bit. So because the VSS runs off the speedo drive and it wasn't turning at the right speed the sensor was sending a improper signal for shifting speed. It would be worth getting a mirror and checking it out. The gears cost about $8 for both from the dealer as opossed to about $60 for the VSS. Wich I changed before I figured out that the gear was worn out. P.S. The gear on the end of the speed sensor looked fine it was just the one inside the tail of the tranny.
