two questions

i have a 28ft shrimp boat that the engine has a crack in the block. its a 351 gas burner and id like to swap it out for a diesel. just so happens that i own a 85 f350 that the engine runs really well and the truck has some issues. id like to know if there is a place to buy the parts to marinize a 6.9 liter diesel engine? my other question is i work for a company that has some equipment, fleet of trucks and several boring rigs. the oil is changed on a regular basis and is kept in about a 1000 gallon tank. its a mixture of oil, trans fluid, hydraulic oil, and some diesel. they told me if i wanted it i copuld have it. would it be worth it to filter it and add about a 2/3 mixture of diesel to it and run it in my truck, or just stay away from it?

The is a member here , Wellcraft, from Iceland if I remember right.

He has a boat with twin 7.3 turbo engines.

Do a search for posts by him, I remember he did post where the engine conversions were done.
If I remember right, it was a company in or near Chicago that did the conversion.

As for the used oil, your IP and injectors may live shorter lives, but with todays fuel prices and the cost of a new IP and injectors, you may come out ahead in the long run.

I would worry about antifreeze and or water in the tank.
I would also want to install a pyrometer, oil contains more BTU's per gallon than fuel does.

If you have fuel checks, the inspector may not be very happy with motor oil in your fuel tank, that would be a non taxed fuel.

Since you are down south, I don't think you would have to much trouble with the oil being thicker than fuel like we would up north when it gets cold.

thanks dave for the responce. yes i dont think i would have any problems with fuel checks or cold weather, but dont want any problems with a burnt up engine either. i was going to empty the 1000 gallon tank into 55 gallon barrels and work with it from there. i wasnt planning on sucking the tank dry, i was going to stay a good distance from the bottom therefor i wouldn't get the water, antifreze, gas(if any), and sludge. once i get it to my house i can work with it from there. as to the engine in my boat i think the 6.9 that i have would push it quite well with the right gear reduction of course. theres boats around here that have 4cylenders in them and they do pretty good.

What kind of pitch is your prop?

With a diesel, the lower RPM would probably not need a gear reduction, but it may need a higher pitch prop.

Found some of the old posts by Wellcraft.
He is located in Norway, not Iceland though.

Looks like his last time at FTE was in 2007.

If you read more of his posts, there is a name of the company that did his conversion in his 26 foot boat.

Here is a link to Mercury Marine, which was also listed in one of the posts.

what i have in my boat right now is a straight drive clutch (1 to 1 gear) and i turn a 15"-13 three blade, now when or if i do the conversion to the 6.9 im going to a 1 1/2 to 1 gear reduction and turning a 18" four blade prop. keep in mind i dont need speed i need power. i will be pushing two 14' x 10' skimmer nets on each side of the boat and it takes the right set-up and power to push those when the tides comming in or going out. i checked the post that wellcraft had on here and seen where i could buy the exhaust manifolds and bellhousing. after seeing the price i think im going to build them out of stainless myself, there not hard to build there just not the fancy smancy ones you buy.
