negitive side of the coil.-Green wire
switched Positive.-red wire
ground.-black wire.
Sould work.
Find out what motor you have. More Info is generaly better than less. 289's never came in a pickup to my knowledge and 302's not till later in the 70's

If the engine runs and you hooked the tach up as stated by a preivous post then my guess is you have a tach problem. If the engine runs that means the coil is operating correctly. I would double check you are on the right terminal on the coil, the same side as the wire that goes to the distrubutor. And I would check that you have a good ground. All electronics need a good ground.

Does the tach not do anything or just displays the incorrect reading?

Red wire to switched power
Green wire to negative on the coil
Black to a known good ground
White to a light switch to turn on the light in the tach.

It makes no differance the brand or size of the engine when installing a tach. They work on 4, 6, and 8 cylinder engines by hooking up as listed above. The only change to that is new engines with out distributors and then there are changes. But as long as it was a single coil fired engine points or electronic ignition no change in the wiring. There is a switch inside the tach to select the number of cylinders from 4 to 6 to 8.
