<i>No clue what the code was. I took the truck to a shop and was told the code indicated the EGR valve. They didn't replace the parts, I did. </i>
Not that easy, the error codes are not that "cut and dried", the computer indicates the problem is in the EGR system but doesn't say exactly what the problem is as you are probably now aware.
Could be the valve, could be the control, could be the vac line to the control or valve and it could be the sensor that reports the valves position to the computer or a combination of any of the above. Only testing will show the true cause of the problem.
If the shop lead you to believe otherwise they were mistaken.
The old OBDI system only requires the neg cable removed to clear the code. OBDII which is roughly late 95 and on just requires a scanner. Either pick up a code scanner from the autoparts store and learn to use it, or visit fordfuelinjection.com and learn the 'paper-clip' method of pulling your codes from OBDI.
So I have this dilema, my check engine light come on while I'm driving but the code scanner does not pick it up. once the engine shuts off the code get erased what the f is that anyone can help me can I run the scanner while the truck is on?
