when i had my LAST 3/4 ton pickup (that was bought because it had the right price and right gearing to get decent mileage), i realized i really LIKED having the capacity to pull something, but that 351 didn't do it so well. so i decided i was switching to diesel sometime. but i was smart enough to know that i couldn't afford it yet. so i waited, the right one came along when i could afford it, at a helluva price, and 54 weeks later it was paid for. now it wasn't new, nor 63 thousand bucks, but it damn near could have bought me some of the houses i was looking at last year. but dang, she'll pull some of those houses.
now i COULD have gone with another half ton, and since i'm a ford guy, that would mean i'd probably average about 15, maybe a little better, out of an F150 4x4. even with the gastronomic difference between gas & diesel, it still costs me about the same to drive. and it's the same story for another F250 w/ V10.
Just have to go with what works for you. It will cost me $500 more in fuel to go camping this year. Thats $12.00 more a day while camping. Everything is going up. We just have to find different ways to deal with it. I know I am going to enjoy each day more driving. It is like people that own nice sports cars such as Corvette. You really do not need one but it sure feels good driving one. We just need to tighten our belts and enjoy life.
Actually I sorta was thinkin these trucks are the corvettes of the truck world. But maybye it just looks that way to me cuz mine is bright red with lotsa chrome. chuck

Well put Firehawk, enjoy your camping, we have several camp outings and some distant horse shows we will be going to. Might not go out to dinner once or twice a month to make up for the fuel cost.

You have that right, that was my point exactly. Besides using the trucks for work, and pulling our toys, we need to enjoy them.
Just got back from another camp trip. We all have diesels (6 on this trip), but very little complaining about fuel prices -- when you're hauling a camper and big trailer with horses and gear, well there's nothing else that does the job for us
Did some fishin' too and the boat costs more to run, but wouldn't trade the fun we had for anything....
We (our group) can all afford it, but sure wouldn't mind it being cheaper -- won't stop us from doing it though...
