Hello all! I have a couple of questions about the new 6.4's. I owned a flawless 2004 4x4 6.0 up until last Friday. Someone decided that they needed it more than me. It has been a week and it has probably hauled its 10th load of "Guest Workers" from Mexico since it has been stolen.
1. I have read about regens, what exactly are regens and what are the results of regens?
2a. I have also read that you can't let these trucks idle too long, what is the result if you do? Where I hunt I have no elec. and I use an inverter to power lights while I clean deer.
2b. I am not clear on the acronym but since you cant let these trucks idle too long there is apparently an idle control add on that holds the rpms @ 1200, how much does it cost?
I am struggling right now, since my truck got stolen I am soon going to have to make the decision on an F150 or 250. I own a travel trailer that only weighs 4k #'s. The diesel is overkill but it sure is nice to be able to just hook up and roll and not worry about sway controllers etc.
the truck goes into regen when the dpf is full and the regen cleans it out so the dpf doesn't get clogged up. I have left my truck idling plenty of times and I haven't heard of any problems with leaving it running and I definently haven't experienced any problems.
ok here it is.. in order to meet the new smog requirments for clean diesel they now not only have a cat, but a diesel particulate filter (dpf). which traps all the soot i your exhaust. every few hundred miles your truck wil go into active regeneration mode (regen). this is when the dpf fills with soot and it makes your truck idle at 1200 rpm and to burn it off. as far as the idle, make sure your truck comes with the power trans take off feature. this will set your truck at high idle so u can run all your excesseries off of it. lights.. water pumps.. pretty much turns your truck into a generator. dont get me wrong, f-150's are nice, but these trucks are awesome!!
If you search for High Idle, there are posts on how to hook up the high idle feature. If you get the upfitter switches, you can use one of those for an even cleaner set-up.
The high idle mod is free! Just the cost of a jumper wire. You can idle them the same as the 6.0. They say not very long because wet stacking is still a fear, but if it didnt hurt the 6.0 then it shouldnt hurt the 6.4.
If you don't need the diesel... what about a V8 or V10 SD? Both are great options, and work well with the larger frame.
Dude, 4K trailer, I would get a kick azz F150 with all the ***** I could put on it and drive happy....You'll go right past those 5$ Diesel signs that are just about up. OR get a used newer 6.0L TD if you have too, but dropping 50 large for a rig to pull 4K....unless your check book is way huge, is not a good decision. JMHO.

Honestly, that is probably the route I end up taking, it kind of depends on how bad I get hosed from insurance also. I have already looked at the F150 KR and they have almost all of the options I want/need.
lol, as far as only pulling 4k #'s, come to a any suburb inTexas if you aren't already and see how many people drive these rigs that don't even own trailers.
BTW, please don't tell me you guys pay anywhere near 50k for a stock truck??
I will check back with you guys Monday, I am headed out of town camping, without my %$#$# travel trailer!
