I went to a dealership today to sell my truck I cant afford the diesel and my daughter needs a car so i tried to trade it and they offered me 32,000 on my truck i bought in 2/07 for 65,000. Been a great truck ,the sales guy said they cant sell them because the diesel prices....so im stuck with it.
If you are going to get something that will replace the truck, you will not save very much money. On the other hand if you got the truck without any real need for it then you can get a little 4 banger or something and save some money.
I think the diesel prices if they stay the same or go higher are going to shake out the tree and get rid of the owners that bought them just because they were cool but really had no practical use for them. Once that happens maybe with a smaller demand diesel prices will get back in line where it should be. This may also apply to all of the heavy duty gassers with no practical use.

You really think that the reduction of diesel pickup owners who drive them for vanity purposes will make a real impact on the supply of fuel and hence lower the price. they are a mere drop in the bucket compared to the commercial users. Just visit a large truck rest area on the interstate at night and see rows of diesels sitting still with the engines idling away while the drivers sleep.

You are right there. All we can do is try at this point. I peddle to the gym saving $6 diesel each time. My 450 has been sitting in the Garage a lot since last fall, driving it only 1000 miles and put on 10,000 miles on our Escape. Same thing my Wifes Armada has been sitting a lot. We bought the Escape used for 16k for my daughter to drive and still had 1 1/2 year left on factory warranty and 5 year extened drive trane. Hopefully in another year we will sell and buy another used vehicle and not loose a whole lot of money. Paid 46k for our Armada, used if you could sell it is only about 20k now. Man hind sight. Hopefully like the housing market, Diesel will drop back down to $3 a gallon. All we can do is hope and try. In the mean time have 3,000 miles of camping trips planned this summer. You know where my stimulus check is going to be going. kimminau2 has real good advise in the mean time.
that sucks, but really, diesel isnt that expensive.
" SAY WHAT!!!!!!!
We only use our 1 ton dually 6.4 to tow our 13K + 5th wheel . It is certainly not a daily driver. Unless one uses these things in a business or to tow a heavy load I can not imagine why anyone would have one. 180..00 per tank of diesel(today) that might get me @ 400 miles down the road is NOT EXPENSIVE??? We live in different worlds. We are
very glad we have a Honda but at 3.899 for gas(today)..it is not on the road as much as it once was. ... Not that Expensive.,.Ye gads.....
I've been paying $120 to $140 for over a year now with my diesel, hasn't stopped me driving it and I don't tow anything, just love the truck and would never go back to a gasser.
Driving my 450 10,000 miles based at 4.49 per gal 13.46 mpg is 743 gallons $3335.81
our Escape 10,000 miles based at 3.59 per gal 22 mpg is 454 gallons $1629.86. That makes it $1705.81 more to drive my truck. To buy another vehicle could still cost you at least $2000 in depreciation alone. Insurance, excise tax, inspections, licences and repairs. If you do not have a choice and it is the only vehicle you can drive, What can you do? Just try to drive easier and consolidate trips. You just have to really appreciate driving your truck more. May have to eat out less, go to D&Ds less, Less beer or smokes. Your going to spend your money one way or the other. Might as well do it for what makes you happy. Already have my $1500 alotted for fuel towing this summer. 41 days of campsites about $2,000 Season passes for Cedar Point and Hershey Park about $850 total about $4250 for the year and a lot of family fun. Also Va beach, and Point Sebago Maine. A week to Disney World, flights, food, hotel tickets for 5 days would set you back at least 5 grand depending where you fly from. My self I do have to work during the week 8 hours a day even on vacation with 2 computers, 4 cell phones, fax, internet. But I am sure going to enjoy the hours off. Sorry for being so long winded
Fire hawk............we're doing alott of miles this year too. Towing to FLA for a week (Salt Springs) then back up to Myrtle beach for 2 weeks. When I planned this I guessed at $4.50/gal looks as though I should have guessed higher.
I too looked at the Airline thing and it would have cost me more to do the whole trip! Where we plan on saving this year is we opted for a seasonal camp site vs. towing every weekend.........ended up being a smart move!
My kids 9 & 11 will not remembe rthe price of diesel but will remember all the fun spent camping........worth every Gallon!
Gonna do X amount of trips this year including at least two to the Sierra's. You only live once and I'd rather burn my money in the truck than invest it in a box that I won't see or care about anyway.
^^^ CJ, I like your street car -- had a buddy with one of those, another with a 351C and me with a '68 390 GT -- fun times indeedy...
I think the diesel prices may torpedo the various makes planning on bringing fuel efficent diesels in to the States. Trucks aside, buyers will be looking at diesels as a VERY expensive car to fuel. Pushes us to hybrids for cars, it does....
hi this is will thanks for the response and i agree with most of you,my problem is basically the depreciation of my truck its a 350 dwr kr 4.30 with ever thing in it and i get 11-11.5 mpg/ I got it so i could get a 5th wheeler for recreational fun not a daily driver i have a 06 civic and a 08 escape . The sales guy offered 32,000/i paid 63,000 and some change in feb 07. he said the reason was that they aren't selling and they don't wont sit on them....dont get me wrong i love my truck i just cant pay 4 to 5 dollars a gallon for any fuel and the price of everything else going up it hurts
