Do a complete fluid change every 30k miles. Either drain the pan and torque converter, or use the fluid exchange procedure here:

One thing needs updating in that article. Ford has stopped licensing MERCON and changed MERCON V to be compatible with the older transmissions. MERCON V is now the right fluid for your trans.
Your '97 has a drain plug in the torque converter, the 2003 does not. The only way to change all of the fluid in that truck is a fluid exchange.
