Well, I finally got around to changing the fluid. Dropped the pan, re-installed Ford filter and flushed everything through the return line method linked above.
It made a HUGE difference - it is a LOT quieter and the shifts are a TON smoother. I guess it degrades slowly over time and you get used to it and don't notice how badly the transmission is behaving.
The only thing it didn't fix is the shudder - it seems a little better but it's still there. I'll add a tube of Dr. Tranny's Shuddre Stop and see if that clears that up.
And I highly recommend the linked flush method. I did the Expy a few weeks back using this and after doing it twice I think I got out WAY more of the old fluid with a lot less work.
Glad that helped you. I don't recall the post you made about the shudder? I put a can of trans-x in mine when I changed fluid & after 1000 miles the fluid is still red.
I didn't add anything to the fluid yet. I figured that before I tried anything I'd see if fresh fluid would fix all the ills.
Since it didn't and the tranny is now full, I figured I'd try the Dr. Tranny shudder fix first. Since it is only a small tube, I won't have to suck out any of the new fluid. I filled it all the way to the top of the fill range - I would not want to pour another quart in unless I pulled some out. That's why I didn't try the Lucas.
