2006 250 5.4, how often should the tranny fluid b changed and what kind of hassle is it? should i have the dealer do it or is there a drain bolt in the converter? also what would the best fluid be to use? thanks
I tow a 7,000# Travel Trailer in the summer with my '99 V10. I change my tranny oil every 30K like clockwork. I take it to a trusted tranny shop to have it changed as my dealership told me that they do not drop the pan or change the filter, they just run the fluid out and replace it. I like having the pan inspected for any debris before replacing the fluid. Pricewise it was about the same money, if memory serves it was about $70.
Assuming you have the torqshift tranny, I'd be inclined to let the dealer do a complete flush and change the external filter. My manual says it should be done every 30k miles. Also, Mercon SP is the only spec fluid that can be used. Currently, Ford/Motorcraft is the only source for this spec fluid. Also, make sure the service department has a heated flush machine as it's required to get all the fluid exchanged.
Also, my 06 has no access to drain the torque converter. Hence why a flush is needed to get all the fluid.
yes it has the torqshift, to bad there is no drain plug i hate paying someone to do smple things like this
Frank
No drain plug anymore but there is a procedure for changing the fluid in the ford service manual, not the owners manual but the one helm sells. The dealer has some kind of a suction device that drains the converter. Put a full syhntetic in it that exceeds the Ford spec. I beleive mobil one will fit the bill. I havent yet changed the fluid on my torqshift cause it is new but I am for sure at 10K. When I did my aod tranny I had trouble but Ford customer service said no problem as long as the fluid met or exceeded ford specs and mobil one did.
Mobil 1 does NOT have a fluid that is compatible with the TorqShift. It requires MERCON SP, and so far the dealer is the only place to find MERCON SP. Mobil 1 is NOT MERCON SP.
Is Mercon SP a synthetic? Also, is the 4R100 tranny a torqshift? What other trannies are there for the Super Duty? Are the trannies different for V10 and Deisel and if so do they require different service and fluids?

I was informed by Ford that I could use any fluid that met or exceeded Ford specs. Mobil one eceeds all oem specs as far as I know but do not know about mercon sp. Need to find out as mine will need converting to syn soon I'm sure. Anyone know for sure?
Yes, I know for sure. Mobil 1 DOES NOT MEET OR EXCEED MERCON SP SPECS!
The 4R100 is not a TorqShift. The TorqShift started only in the diesels in 2003, and went into the gas engine trucks in 2005. After 2004 there was no more 4R100.

It does not mention Mercon SP...so do NOT use this ATF fluid in your 5R110 tranny.

Is this true? They dont drop the pan and change the filter? I am scheduled to have this done soon. I have 77,000 and have never had a trans service, no issues, but I dont tow or haul, my truck is like a car to me.

It is correct that FORD does not drop the pan and change the tranny filter...as part of the scheduled maintenance. According to FORD...the tranny filter is lifetime for that tranny.
If you want FORD to drop the pan and change the filter, then that is a special request.
