Showing my ignorance

I hate to show my ignorance but all I’ve ever done repairing a vehicle is with this truck. I’ve replaced the starter, the ball joints, and now I’m doing the power steering pump. I have no idea which part of the hydraulic fitting to turn in order to remove the line. What I see from the pump out is a nut that looks like it is screwed directly into the pump...a nipple that is threaded with a place to put a wrench on it...and a square head that the metal line goes into from the crimp that attaches it to the rubber hose. Do I hold the threaded nipple and turn the nut that screws directly into the pump housing? Or do I turn the threaded nipple?

Thanks

Hold back up on the large fitting and loosen the smaller one( threaded nipple) to remove the line.

Question

In other words the end of that line will actually turn...the threaded nipple will spin and it is actually part of the hydraulic line. I need to grab the larger nut that screws into the pump and turn the line (nipple) out of that fitting.

Correct. The large fitting holds the reservoir on and the pressure regulator is behind it. If the pump has the reservoir on it, there is no need to remove the large fitting.

Thanks...I hate asking what would seem like an elementary question. I was almost positive about how to get it off but the last thing I wanted to do was bust that line. I can’t afford to pay anyone to work on this truck so I’ve turned into a mechanic.

I hear ya. I've been working on my own and others for over 28 years. Still learning. What I don't know, I soon will. I am not afraid to ask questions and research a problem before tackling it. Just did my first auto trans rebuild and upgrade last Sept.

Do not worry about asking what seems like a dumb question. There are lots of us here that ask dumb questions all the time. It would be more dumb to brreak that line because you didn't ask. No one will call anyone out here for asking questions. It's how we all learn. By you asking the question you did, it goes into the search data base for the next person. Keep on turning those wrenches and asking questions.

Well, you being here, asking questions, shows you know what you are doing. Ask first, fix, teach later.

You are doing good by fixing your own truck. Like said, that is why we are here. If people like you would not have questions like this, what would we do? I wonder if there will be a time that all 7.3 owners know everything and don't have to ask questions.

Hey Olddog66, we are all asking questions of someone with more knowledge than we have ...If a person is not one of those asking questions of others, they are a hopeless case . The first rule of education is admitting that you don't know...I don't know if I will have a bock or a stout...see, I'm learning!

PS...Can you put your first name in your signature file so we know you on a first name basis...It's weird to have an FTE family member and not know there name.

Yep, nothing wrong with asking questions. It's better to ask and get the info that yoiu need before gassing on and maybe ending up in trouble. I've had to ask all kinds of questions here. Some times more than once!
