-You can't get 500k out of a 7.3? The reason people are putting 5.9's in is that they are looking for some serious HP, and even the newer more advanced 466's still have that crappy HEUI system, that we are all trying to go away from. No such thing as putting in B codes or something like that for more power, because they're already there.

Why? The # was put down, nothing left to see. Longer run = less power. I got this tip from Jeremy who was very good at estimating HP by the duration of the run, among other things. He won the Ford class HP guess prize in his own truck.

Yeah, on the second dyno run you havent seen because i havent uploaded it, the dyno operator said that he was given instructions to run it out to 4000rpm, which in this case with huge tires and stock gears, was over 160mph on the rollers!

The older 466's didn't use a HEUI system they had a high pressure fuel pump. My dozer has a 466 in it, great engine and pry where it belongs in heavy iron or tractor pull. Pry not the best for a daily driver.

dude, look on ebay, you can get 88-96 for anywhere from 800$-4000$

they have to replacce buses within X years, by law, so you end up with buses with low mileage, for cheap.

That was an amazingly clean and powerful truck. And that 750 HP was on a single turbo too.

You DON'T want an engine that's been in a school buss! As I was Googling for info on my C7, I came across a "school buss maintenance" forum and started reading to see how C7's were holding up. Those engines get abused, they get started cold and then immediately run hard to get out of the yard because the drivers are in a rush to start their routes. Even though they might only have 100K or less, it's at an average speed of 15 MPH, and that doesn't include all the extensive idle time! All they do for that 100 K is start stop idle, start stop idle, etc...

I appreciate all the ideas, but it's not in the cards right now. If this ever becomes a weekend toy, who knows what I'll do. BTW, I've seen an OBS pulling truck with a rodded 466 that made over 2000 HP. Wicked bad for a pulling rig, but not good for a DD.

It doesn't matter though. I'm not putting a 466 or a C7 or anything other than a 5.9 if it's not a 7.3. While I agree that it would be pretty unique, I don't want to do it. Too much custom fab work and unknown reliability issues. This is a truck that I use often, use for work, use to help people around here who don't have trucks, etc. and it's going to be difficult to not have it over the next few months. For the simple fact that I need it back on the road without too much delay and that the 5.9 has been proven to work well, that is the only swap I'll consider.

Also, if it has air brakes, we know it at least ran long enough to build pressure!

Reality check for me : i know you wouldnt want to put the 466 in you`re truck, but its something to keep in mind.

I`m obsessed with the idea, and dont even have one yet!

Jeremy,

You might consider some of these 6" aussie stacks when you get rollin on the new build!

I was thinking about going to 6" stacks, but we'll have to see. I'm a fan of the straight mitre cuts, so that's what I'd probably stick with.

Short update, because I'm exhausted from today. Pulled the motor today and tore it down. Plain and simple, the #1 rod failed. The piston was fine other than a part of the skirt broken off. There was a very small crack in it, but no where near failure. The cylinder was actually holding oil when the head came off. A few of the other pistons had small cracks in them too, right at the 12:00 and/or 6:00 positions, but they were very small. There was no evidence of any piston to valve contact and all the pushrods were straight.

Damaged the #2 piston walls from the schrapnel, the cam got damaged, a lifter was damaged and the #1 oil jet was knocked clean off. The rest of the oil jets were all there. The injectors also looked great and had no damage.

I updated the webshots with the new photos from today. New pics start here:
