Subscribing to hear the rest of the story.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune.
It should be a lot easier to tell if you have forged or PMRs now, just look through the window.

It's got forged rods. The crack in the block on the passenger side won't let me see the rods and the hole in the driver's side has the lower crossmember in the way. I pulled the inspection plug by the oil filter and rotated the engine by hand until I could see a rod. I saw a definite nut on a stud, not a bolt.

I tried to get a pic of it, but that's a pretty akward place to get into and snap a photo. Here's what I got though, and I think the nut on stud is pretty obvious.

I kinda figured it was going to have forged ones. Now I guess we wait for the teardown IOT hopefully see where it failed. My bet is wristpin area due to piston failure. Not that any of it will make you feel better.

Hmm, so that's defanitely throwing out my plans of putting forged rods in a build and shooting for 500hp. And kinda seems pointless to spend all that extra in hard parts such as billets, main studs and girdle etc, to support 550hp. For a few grand more you can have a cummins in there, and have alot more reliable horshpower. Kinda seems like a no-brainer to me. Jerm check your PM box.

For about $20000 in engine mods, injectors, oil, and two turbos i could get a 600hp powerstroke that would probably not be reliable. Or at least i would feel very unsafe about it. For that much or a little bit more, i can buy a complete commonrail 5.9 for 7K, get the adapters and parts to install it for around 5k, which gives me a few grand to throw into the engine such as o-rings, head studs, cam and valve springs, then as money comes in, add a dual fueler, compounds and big *** injectors and easily hit 800hp, or WHATEVER you want really.

dang jeremy thats not cool. hopefully you will get it all worked out, and ultimately with whatever route you take on fixing this issue it will still be a badass truck.

Yeah, I'm eager to get into it to find out. I've got a hoist lined up and an engine stand ready to go so now I just need to get it pulled. Hopefully by this weekend I'll have it out.

I agree that I think it's a piston failure. My guess is the cooling jet fell off quite a while ago and resulted in a piston failure. Don't know if I'll be able to tell that much when I get into it though.

Edit: Kris nailed it on why I'm thinking the Cummins conversion is the way to go. I started adding up everything today, and it just doesn't make sense to me to put that much money into another 7.3 and still be at 500-550 HP. For the same or even less money, I can have a 600+ HP Cummins that will be reliable.
