I really don't know much about the FPR shim, but I thought I would toss this out there for an alternative. LINK It just seems like a handy deal and at $20 not too bad of a price. I don't know how to do the original mod, but it may save some work???
I did the mod a while back, I did it for free. I'm not saying its a bad idea. Just that $24.81 with shipping is a lot for a little spring. I guess if need to replace a weak spring.
shimming ups the fuel pressure so you have more fuel available under load, such as towing up a hill.
Under all conditions, not just under load. However, the amount of fuel pressure you have is not really adjustable. You can get it into a rough ballpark but not exactly where you want it. I'd skip it and get a Regulated Return with the better fuel pressure regulator.

I think I may be headed towards DFA's regulated return. I guess only time will tell.

They are NOT a regulated return. There is no real regulator. Basically joining the heads together. It is a CCK. Cackle Cure Kit. You still use the same stock regulator, good, bad or ugly. DI has a regulated return that feeds the back of the heads first. ITP has a nicer looking RR that feeds the front of the heads first. Those are Regulated Return kits. I'd spend the real money for the RR before I dump $120 into a CCK and later decide I might want to go with the RR

Jason is working on a complete replacement fuel system with regulated return. Bdrummons is running the prototype IIRC.

Ahh, Jason is working on a newer version of the system i am running. It will have an adjustable regulator IIRC. Mine does not have the adjustable regulator, I have to switch out orifices, or turn up the pressure on my pump.
