Can one of you guys post a diagram of the FPR and where the spring is located. I want to put a bb in it for a shim but i don't know where to start looking. I'm new at diesel mechanics taking into thought I just inherited my dad's 95 F-250
Remove the plug 18 or 19mm I can't remembe which. Then with a magnet remove the spring and the valve. place the shim in the valve and seat the spring then reinstall.
it will raise fuel pressure. First you need to check you current fuel pressure. If it is below 60 psi yes go ahead and shim it. if your 60 psi or higher I wouldn't. You don't want over 70-75 psi.
BEFORE YOU START check the pressure at the valve using a dial gauge. Should be no higher than 75 after shim.
This is how i did the FPR shim,
1) remove bolt with a 19mm wrench
2) using small needle nosed pliers, carefully pull the spring out
3) put a small dab of grease on the end of the spring
4) place the BB in the grease carefully so it holds in place
5) Carefully, place the spring BB first back into the regulator, may want to have a buddy watch from the Drivers side fender to make sure that it goes in ok and the BB doesn't fall off. It's hard to see while your putting the spring back in.
6) put the bolt back on the end and tighten, but don't go crazy, just snug it up.
Seems like I've been pasting this everywhere! Someone can edit if they want to... just worked well for me...
Robb , Does shiming raise the idle speed? What will I notice if I shim the fpr?
No, doesn't raise idle, Just gets your fuel pressure back into spec. The spring wears out over time, especially with the age of these trucks. Higher fuel pressure = better atomization (correct me if i'm wrong here), smoother idle (in some cases) and maybe better MPG. It's a small mod, but worth the 2 min it takes to do it
Thanks Robb, Ill check my pressure and see ifn I need to do this mod.... I have a low idle problem so it would seem to me that if my fuel psi was really low it would cause a low idle that quite possibly be corrected with the BB mod..........
Since you're under the hood anyway, don't forget to clean the screen, too.
Remove the bolts holding the FPR.
Gently pry the FPR back. The screen will be on the upper-right corner of the FPR. Use the stick from a cotton swab (cotton removed) to gently remove the junk from the screen. Bolt the FPR back on and you're done.
