Im not sure why they did that i think to make the truck lighter and to get good mpgs with all the stupid emmisions and gas mileage crap sure makes it easier for the frame to rot in half or snap
other than expense, why don't they use more aluminum?? properly engineered it can be as strong as steel but a fraction of the weight. make the body panels out of kevlar, with the color dyed on so scratches wouldn't leave big white marks, no rust, no dents, etc... she'd be one heck of an expensive truck, but tough and light i think.
one of my buddys bought a new ford 1/2 ton in 83-84 and it had f-100 on one side an f-150 on the other. heard a story about a guy buying a new 1980 ford 1/2 ton with the swiss cheese frame brought it home put a 100 gallon slip tank in the back went to fuel his tractor out in the field drove across the worked field when he got to the tractor the truck looked like a banana
