I once suggested here that gas guzzler taxes be imposed on anything over about 7700 GVWR, to be assessed at the time of a vehicle's registration. If you could prove it was for a legitimate commercial use, the tax would be waived. Needless to say that went over like a ton of bricks with most here.
Good idea, But make it anything over 5,000 GVWR. Anyone who can show proof at the time of purchase the vehicle is for agriculture or commericial use at the time of purchase the tax shall be waived. Make the tax about 25% in addition to sales tax.
I keep on hearing that these speculators are responsible for the price of oil.
Who are there speculators?
Commodity speculators just like in pork belly, orange juice and gold. Investors move money around to where they will get the best return. Currently, with the Fed lowering the interest rate, speculators will move money from low profit T-bills to something more profitable and that is oil futures. Plus the higher world wide demand only serves to make oil futures more attractive and oil more expensive. Notice how oil futures go up everytime the Fed lowers the bank interchange rate to counter our slowing economy. If you watch foreign exchange you would see the Aussie dollar almost on equal footing with the US dollar now, and that is a first. The US dollar is crashing all around the world in relation to other currencies. Since oil is paid for in dollars those countries are making out like bandits. As OPEC just said to Bush..it is the economy, stupid and if better managed then the dollar would be strong and oil cost less.
When gas gets too high and the oil companies are grinning to much I will stay at home and weather it out. I think everyone will pay for it like always. Put gas in your boats, trucks, atv, and everything else. Everything is getting high even the cost of living. I love trucks and don't think I could bare having a car ... Who knows that time might come though.
When gas hits $4.00/gallon---$5.00/gallon---and more, and it will,
what are you willing to give up to pay for it?
I'm already making the adjustments. I'm in the process of remodelling the house for the last time, before putting it up on the market for sale. I'm going to be giving up my 50 mile one way commute. Also the RV is gonna go, especially since I really don't use it much anyway. When it's gone, the Jeep will go as well. My minitruck will do truck duties, and the Aveo will continue to carry on as my commuter. I'll be looking for another fixer-upper house to get on the cheap, so I can get a place that I can make exactly how I want it. A place I have my eye on, is only 17 miles from work.
I'm going to keep driving, just like the rest of the world. Like someone said, there is NO OTHER option. We are a mobile society. End of discussion,
I don't blame the government and I don't blame other countries. It was my choice to purchase a house this far away from a city. It was my choice to purchase one vehicle that best suited the various needs I had, from hauling 10,000 lbs of wet bales to simply hauling my fat butt around town, my truck does it all with out complaining.
I have come to the conclusion that we'd have a lot less problems if the environmental people hadn't been filing complaints about every single oil refinery and nuclear plant. If we don't compromise on things then we're going to end up paying $4.0.... oh, wait. We're already at 4.
The idea that a foreign country is drilling oil right off our own shores makes me want to run out and punch one of those idiots that ride their bikes around Ithaca and spend their weekends holding signs on main street blaming Bush for everything. Every time the price goes up those protesters should get knocked down.
Please sign me up for a nuclear reactor site. I have 170 acres I'm willing to rent out and all I ask is free electricity for life.

You do realize that there is already a tax on fuel. If I get 15 mpg with my "gas guzzler", I'm already paying twice the federal tax as compared to someone that gets 30 mpg. Why do folks almost always try and tax more and more?

We don't need more taxes. There is no reason to reduce consumption nationally, just personally based on economic considerations. Gas is "worth" whatever it costs on the market. No likee, institute appropriate personal conservation measures. Conservation will not drop the price, but it will drop the dollar/mile cost to those who conserve.

I don't drive my 86 F250 4x4 near as much as when gas was $2. I went down yesterday and replaced an 88 D250 with a 97 Chevy Blazer 4x4. The dodge got 9-12 MPG, the Blazer gets 15-18 MPG. The Blazer is 4x4 to Dodge was 2wd. Not a great big savings but with gas prices being what they are every little bit helps. I think my wife is changing work places. She will cut the commute from 90 miles round trip to 22 miles round trip. Beyond that I'm not doing much else. JUST HAVING TO SUCK IT UP. OH I'm VOTING REPUBLICAN so we can stay the course to the poor house, for the working person. I think we need to give the oil companies more tax breaks,
The truck that is essentially replacing the F150 as the workhorse. It's small, its ugly, but it does just about everything I need a truck to do, and uses only half the fuel that the F150 does.
We complain about the gas and fuel prices, and we should, but what about the truckers. They are probably paying more for fuel now than their trucks. I have 5 trucks on the road but they are not semis. I have been able to pass on about 30% of the cost. I have to eat the rest. Owner operators are in trouble. Prices on everything will go to try and cover the cost.
But fear not, I have the solution. Let's nuke China to lower the demand, and then invade South America and take all their oil. And while the guns are still smoking, let's hunt down all the tree huggers. As you can see I majored in diplomacy in college. Maybe I've been too long without a beer.
We are averaging 375 per month on fuel in Central Texas as of August 2007. And already up to 387 in last 30 days. I may end up riding bicycle to work. The only thing working in our favor is that all our vehicles are paid for.
