This is the only place I post. Not even registered on any other places. You can post ANY question here and have it answered respectfully. I have ALOT of respects for folks like yourself that are/were ford techs. you have MUCH more experence with the truck that I do.
Here on this form, you don't have to worry about getting flamed for saying something (unless you bought a Dodge or Chevy...) and can always depend on the help here. I started on this form knowing NOTHING about diesels... Now I don't mind ripping right into my engine and do what has to be done.
Just to stay on topic here, I have the Gray CPS installed BY FORD and haven't had a problem with it (fingers crossed) there so cheap might have an extra one in the truck just incase. I don't know what they were talking about on the other site... So I'll keep my fingers crossed. I was thinking about getting the black one from Int'l... 100 bucks. No thanks. So I'll be rocking he new gray one

Before the recall, I bought two gray's to keep in the glovebox. Was just starting to have some minor problems with the black CPS when the recall was mentioned (by a friend of mine and on this site, didn't hear it from my dealer) so I scheduled an appointment.
Still have two gray's in the glovebox and no problems with the recall replacement CPS.
BTW...Thank you, Joe et al, for the info and experience you've shared here. I haven't needed to do a lot of tinkering with my 7.3, but with the info I've gathered here, I have no problem giving it a try (with everyone's help, of course).
Well I do post in 2 other forums from time to time and I am registered at a few other on top of that. FTE where I spend 99% of my time for just the reasons you all have said. We are a group of people who respect each other. While we can disagree and hammer out the finer points of performance and diagnostics its done with respect and when its not done in respect that gets worked out as well.
TDS does get out of hand at times but there are some very knowledgble guys there that really go out of their way to help people out.
Coonhunter, I personally have complete trust in my local diesel mechanic. Only he is ask for, on any visit to the ford dealer. It is the replacement part that is in question, it's reliability, not the mechanics knowledge. Before I found this site he helped me tremendously with questions and advice, most of which he got no pay for. My hat is off to him and the many others on this web site that are willing to share what they know for no other reason than a thank you. R/CJ
My dealership experiences are vastly different. Everyone did the diagnostic tree (as required by cummins), and got paid a fair amount of time for it, even though you could damn near look at it and see what was wrong. Warranty work was always a little skimpy on the time, but everyone often was able to still come pretty close in making it. No one in the shop took any short cuts, even when they were loosing time. People still screwed up the diagnostics, even the old guys. It happens to everyone. Doesn't mean the shop/tech is incompetent, just that problems are not always as cut and dry as people (or diagnostic trees) think. I remember one time that we had a miss under acceleration that we were not able to narrow down the faulty cylinder, ever. The customer left the shop very unhappy, as you can imagine, but we could not say for certain which one it was. We had two dynoes in the shop (awesome for testing this), but it all did no good in this case.
Working there was the most awesome tech jobs I have ever had. I would still be there if I hadn't got a more lucrative offer in the engineering department.
I was offered a job a few years ago at a ford dealer to work strictly on powerstrokes. The pay was 1.5x what I made at cummins, but I didn't take it...
If I ever go back into wrenching full time that would be my dream job to work only on PSD's though not at a dealer. Maybe one of these days I will open up 17:1 Diesel Performance! (BTW I call dibs on that name so no one else can take it!!)
I think this is one of those things that a few bad apples spoil the whole lot. I've never dealt with my dealer, but I'm sure they are well qualified to perform the repairs.
We had a local mechanic switch shops. The old place that he worked at was pretty popular when he was there. Since he started this new location, his former employee is struggling for business. All his clients followed him to the new one.
So I guess I'm saying that the people that put for the extra effort get something in return. Just like any business.
So the new CPS from ford thats on recall is 30 something then guess I need to get the wife down there on monday to get me one for the glove box. Think I had a minor problem with it the other day. Had tuner turned up accelerated then let off truck just died but then fired right back up so I didnt think anything of it. I couldnt tell you guys what this site has done for me on the decision making ends of what is best to do with truck, I have found all of you to be very friendly and helpful so hats of to this site Thank You.
Big thanks to all you guys on here. I checked the link for my trucks recall and yep my truck was listed. Too bad I had to cps to go out three days after buying my truck. I have a good friend that is a parts manager at a ford stealership, so I pay about 10% over invoice on everything. Friends are good. Just like you guys!!!
I kept my old cps and put it in the glove box, it would still start back after dieing so I didn't want to be out and the new one go completely out.
