Driving 1,500 personal miles a month (work estimates, day to day errands, ect)
Diesel - 1,500 Miles divided by 12 Mpg = 125 Gallons of fuel X 3.65 a gallon = $456.25 Average oil change cost $105 divided by 3 months $35 a month to oil changes for a total of $491.25 a month.

Camry 1,500 Miles divided by 27 Mpg = 55.5 Gallons of gas @ 3.10 a gallon equals $172.22 for gas + $8 a month towards oil changes + $300 a month for payment and insurance for a total of $480.22

Hopefully I'm pretty right on my calculations but I'll actually be saving $11.22 a month. Geez, what will I do with all that extra $$$? lol

I know you're just trying to help me out and I really do appreciate it but it all comes down to the bottom line numbers right?
I think your oil change and mileage maybe off, but not worth talking about. Don't forget to include insurance. To me it sounds like a slight loss by getting the car.

I'm totally serious when I say I here people talking about swapping vehicles for mileage and not include the vehicle cost.

To me personally, it's not worth breaking even with another vehicle. Then again it would be nice to drive something new.

Good luck to you.

When fuel was 2 bucks a gallon, everybody thought that the world would end if it ever hit 3 bucks. Now that it's in the 3's, 4 dollars a gallon sounds scary. When it hits 4 dollars a gallon (probably this summer) I guess $5 a gallon will be scary. My personal prediction - when it costs 50% of your weekly take home pay to fill your tank, the s**t will hit the fan.

I'm driving my wife's Honda CRV a lot more lately.
Haha, funny you mention that. I remember when $1.79 was "gold plated" for premium. It sucks, I agree. Ijust filled up tonight. Cheapest station in town is a mere $3.49. They have been that way for about 4 days so I wanted to get in there before they are where the other stations are at $3.59-$3.75.

Passed the neighborhood Sunoco station on the way to dinner tonight. Self-serve, Pay at the Pump diesel - $4.29.

I fill up every day, sometimes twice. All I got to say is this sucks. I need a heavy truck for work and try to drive my gas miser van when I can (13/17 mpg). Still debating on the whole gas truck or diesel truck.

The only time "getting another vehicle for fuel economy" makes sense is if you're making payments on the gas-guzzler. In that case, parking/selling the gas-guzzler CAN make sense.

If the gas-guzzler is PAID FOR, then in NO circumstances can you save money by buying a more fuel-efficient car. Even if you pay cash for it.

The $300 (or more) payment buys a LOT of fuel for the gas guzzler.

i dont know about that statement. I spend an average of $360 a week (or $1440 /mo) for gas. If I can drive an used econobox for 1/3 the time, I would save about $118 a month. ( I been there and done that, had a 93 Dodge Spirit when I had my stroker)

here is my math-
$150 /mo payment $50 /mo ins (used econobox)

457 gallons /mo with guzzler = ~4000 miles a month ($1440)
so driving an econobox for 1/3 the miles.....

my F250 - 303 gallons /mo @3.15 =~ 2667 miles at a cost of about $954
in an econobox at 1333 miles at best of 25mpg, would use 53 gallons, or $168

leaving me with a fuel savings of $318 a month with a total of $1122 in gas used.

At $200 a month for econobox costs, leaves $118 a month for maintenance, license plates, car wash, lunch, etc.

For me, the math seems to work, but I think I may be an extreme case. For most people, the 1000 miles or so they put on in a month, I dont see how the math could work for them. Also, I dont buy new, everything I own it used, usually 2 years old when I get it. I let the first guy take the huge depreciation whack, then I stand in line for mine.

You forgot to insure it(you only mentioned monthly costs, but insurance will by itself pick away the majority of that 118 for monthly bills twice a year depending on the type of insurance and type of vehicle etc. it might take it and more depending on how you insure it) and your also making the big assumption that nothing big happens that requires a big repair bill. I see people all the time recommending buying a used econo car, however, you also have to realize that econo cars not only are they cheap on gas, but they are also cheaply put together and don't last near as long on average as other vehicles that aren't designed for economy. Buying a 2 yr old vehicle from me would mean your buying a vehicle with 100k(I am not the norm I realize that, but I don't know what mileage reading that you get your used vehicles at as you didn't mention that), if that was an economy car you might be able to eek out another 30k before you start to see repair problems. Now if you can fix those problems yourself then great, I can't. It still doesn't make munch sense to me, but you have to do what you think is best.

I know, I drove an 05 E450 ambulance with the 6.0. (Which was a POS that they are still having constant problems with)

The E-series 6.0 is only rated at 235HP and 440ft/lbs. I imagine it has something to do with heat and how tight that engine is crammed in there. The F-series got the full power 6.0. I now drive 2 04 F450 ambulances with the full power 6.0s. (Also POS)

i believe the e350 is rated for less power because there is no room to mount an inter cooler.

Its a cooling issue with the E-series.

The 6.8l V10 is detuned as well.

"here is my math-

$150 per month for the car payment, $50 per month for insurance = $200 per month

My dodge spirit had 44,000 miles on it and I bought it for $1500. My actual insurance bill was $35 a month.

that is provided nothing ever goes wrong with it also. which you may get a cheap car that runs forever or get one that dumps the trannie after a 1000 miles.

All it takes is one good size repair bill and it'll wipe out that 1500 that you paid for it that's for sure and more then likely it won't take much for the insurance to total it either if some other accident happens. I can't believe 1500 after only 44k please tell me that was a typo, if it really isn't worth that much after 44k then that ain't gonna last long because it was definately cheaply made.
