All i know is i've seen a rear axle get ripped out by attaching to it (of course it was a toyota)...i've never seen one come out from recovery from the frame....i think it comes down to you're putting ALL of the force of pulling through the mounting points, whether it be the four links or the leaf spring ubolts.. when you're pulling from the frame you're going to more evenly spread that force over both axles......I dunno...i'll stay with shackles mounted to the frame myself...
Nick, I deffinatly understand your thinking.....
BUT, I've never seen any get pulled out by the hitch and leave their axles in the ground.
I have seen guys wheel a little rough and spit out lift blocks (even as small as 3") and rip their axle out from under the truck.
I could only imagin jerking on the axle being worst....
OF coarse the axle (shackles and stuff) could be beefed up enough to possibly be a reliable tow point.

it was on a TGW video, thats the only time ive heard of it........im not knockin the hitch approach, im just saying there is nothing wrong with hooking to your axle.......
another thing to keep in mind that it doesn't take alot of force to pop a tube out of the center section....i think the picture in mind was a rockwell...and that might be ok...but i'd be concerned pulling on an axle tube. IF you're gunna do it....it better be right at the spring/four link mount point
I understand the idea of why pulling from the axle might be good, but if it is stuck real bad I would think the frame would be a stronger point to pull from. I guess it just all depends. Someone go try it and see what works LOL. I would think it might strain the u-bolts and if they break you might get your axle back and leave the truck in the mud

If I had $40k, I'd buy it just to see the look on the guys face at the inspecion station to get it registered! haha It would be priceless. They could look at it from a mile away and see it was not going to be street legal!
I wanted to build something pretty close to this truck but with a stroked 460. I like the SD body style, throw some rocks under it and some big boggers. it'd be a fun toy!
