my dad has a 1997 F250 light duty. It has the switch on the dash for the 4 wheel drive engagment. He says that when he turns the switch to 4hi that he hears a clicking noise in the dash but the 4 wheel drive will not engage. Any ideas?
Thanks

Reason: more info
On my 99 f150 the module was on back of the fuse box and the relay was by the gauge cluster. Its a pain to tear apart the dash but I bet thats what is going on with yours
Oh, I forgot to add that it is a 4x4 module (even says it on the box) but it also runs the power windows, wiper motor and something else I cant think of

Thanks for the info. I will be checking this tonight after work. I will let you know what I find.
There is also a vacuum pump on the front axle. It's located slightly to the passenger side on the back of the front axle and its covered with a plastic sheild. If you don't use your 4 wheel a lot sometimes that becomes stuck and you have to manually work it to break it free. If you look at the pump it has a little piston on it that moves a lever on the differential. If you engage your 4 wheel drive when the trucks on and you don't see the piston push that lever very far you may neet to grab a set of pliers and work that lever back and forth to break it free. Don't wory, you won't break it as long as your not reefing on it really hard. I had to do this to my truck this winter because I would here a click in the dash when I turned by 4x4 but it wouldn't actually engage. Once I worked that switch back and forth a few times the 4 wheel drive works great. This is just one possible solution but you might as well try it.
I have had a lot of personal issues the last few months and have not been able to check it out yet. I should be able to this week. Also, my dad told me that when turning the switch to 4hi it clicks and will sometimes engage. When he turns it to 4lo it will not click and it will not engage.
I finally had time to diagnose the 4x4 inop in my dads truck. I got a wiring diagram from a friend. I was able to check the inputs and outputs of the GEM module. I checked the outputs first. They all worked properly except where they received a signal from the GEM. I then checked all the inputs. They all worked properly also. Process of elimination, it's the GEM module at fault.
With the wiring diagram I was able to see where I should have power and ground. I could also connect power or ground where needed to test the relays and shift motor. Since everything else checked ok, it had to be the GEM.
The only inconsistency I found was with the shift switch. The resistance in ohms was slightly higher in all three posistion compared to what the diagram said it should be.
Fortunately I have an old friend that works in parts. Got the module for $205 instead of $280. 4x4 works fine now and my dad can pull his tractor up my steep gravel driveway with no problem.
