With those automatic locking hubs they dont just engage as soon as you push that buttom, once you hit that button you have to go forwards....you can actaully hear them engaging as you go forward if you are going slow. And in order to disengage them you have to turn that buttom off and back up atleast 10 feet....i just go a long ways
Just to make sure that they are not turning, engage them drive forward and what not, them jack up the whole truck and see if the front and rear wheels spin, then you know for sure.
Do you hear any sounds, whether from under the dash, or near the hubs, when you try to engage? It certainly sounds like the hubs are shot. Is he testing these just by sound, or is he engaging, then driving around? The only surefire way to test is to find a field, or backroad (read: NOT TAR), and engage them...and punch the throttle. If you have front wheel spinnage, it is obviously not a hub problem. Let us know if you hear any sounds, and we can diagnose from there (but I have a feeling a search for 'auto hubs' in this forum is in your immediate future ).
You said he had the push button transfer case. It might not even be in 4wheel drive. The electric shift transfer case shift motor is known to go out on these trucks. It happened on my truck. I had a link to see how to fix it if it is that, but its not working anymore. Do a search on this forum and you'll be able to find alot of threads about it. Its not that hard to fix yourself .
first have your friend replace those auto hubs with some Warn hubs. the autos suck and will break or not work. if he still doesnt have 4wd after this then his tcase is at fault with either a bad motor or an electrical issue. has some choices at that point. personally i would swap over to a manual tcase because it will always work when you through that lever back. or he can replace motor or wiring if thats the issue.
