I don`t think it a conspiracy, just a sign of the changing and much more complex times. It`s certainly harder for the auto makers to meet new vehicles manufacturering standards that`s bound to be reflected both in the vehicle price and repair.
another truth there prep. if they persue the rumors of taking pre '85 vehicles off the road they'll be making it harder to survive period. must be nice to be rolling in a 'burban or something with your 6 digit sallary, dictating how the common folk must live... talking 'bout the government, not preppy...
How does this sound to you guys --- new vehicles, especially the new diesels, burn MORE fuel to LOWER their emissions!!! Seems like a weird concept to me!
I know some guys that have brand new diesels out there, duramaxes, dodges, and fords. The one operator traded his 06 duramax for an 08 - he told me he used to get 18-23 with his old one nad his new one is, well, the best he ever got was 12 so far and he said I don't check anymore because I don't want to know. The guy with the new ford says the best is like 12-15, then he proceeds to say you don't buy a new truck for good fuel mileage!! The dodges are around the same, on guy told me he got 17mpg on the highway but only 12 operating. Myself my 07 6.0L gets from 12-18 with the best being 20 on a good long highway cruise. So Iam convinced that the new trucks ARE harder on diesel and for now I'll keep mine. And actually, most guys I talk to say the same thing - their old ones seemed to be better on fuel.

Hey now, I drive a PSD!!!
Ive heard also of guys say the same thing about the newer trucks getting poor mileage. I told one dealer what I get empty with my 7.3 and he just said keep it lol.
heck, the '81 chebby i had for a brief and dull moment would get 18mpg...carburated pig, well worn out, but it didn't have any emissions crap on there!! my '96 would get a sweet 24 on the highway @ 100km/h and 20 easy in the city when driven nicely.
Yeah i think they get crappy mileage now cause of all this emmisions crap
You hit the nail on the head! Also, there has been a trend for quite a few years to go to higher revving smaller displacement engines - both gas and diesel. I remember when this happened with farm tractors in the mid to later 1980's. The 875 Versatile made 280 hp from the 14l (855 cu in) and the replacement 876 used the 10l(in the low 600 cu in range). In this case it was only displacement as both were 2100 rpm engines.
