ok, i think my shift cable is bad, its kinda hard to shift through the gears and it feels real loose and sloppy, sometimes it dont go all the way in park and in order to start it i have to put it in neutral.. and SOMETIMES wheni think its in park and i get out it starts to jerk forward because its not fullyin park!! i think the cable is stretched.. i ordered the cable and i am going to tackle it monday. my question is do i have to take the whole column apart or does it attach in an are that i can get to it under the dash?? is there anything i need to know before i tackle this job? does anyone think this is something other than the shift cable??
matt, i dont have the problem of the reverse lights not lighting, but i do have the repair manual and it does say that the transmission range sensor is responsible for that. if i were you i would replace it. i am about 99% sure that my problem is my shift cable which may be worn. i ordered a new one and will install tuesday or wednesday. if i were you i would look into your problem further because i have heard that leaving this prolem could possible cause damage to the transmission. i believe the loose feeling shift is a definite sign of the cable worn.. the only thing im not 100% about is if the cables are worn (i.e. stretched or something) or if they just need to be tightend. i am going under the truck to see today...
Matt, I talked with one of the mechanics here in the shop. (former Ford dealership)
He suggested checking the 2 Torx nuts that are holding the bottom plate of the column also. He thinks they are a Tx 27. Some of the early ones didn't have blue locktite on them and they come loose also. Just have to tighten from above brake pedal.
Sorry i didn't get back to you sooner.
hey matt, i figured mine out. it was the 2 torx screws.. to locate them i removed my fuse panel door and also the black plastic lining under that (above the pedals) and if you folow the steering column down (you may have to play with the shift while your under there to see which part is the shift tube. make sure you set the parking brake..) once you follow the column down you will see where the shift cable attaches.. it has a black plastic housing and goes through the fire wall just above the gas pedal. look at the bracket where it atatches at the base of the steering column, there is where you will see the 2 torx screws. mine were almost completely out.. i tightened them up and re-adjusted the cable and now she shifts like BRAND NEW!!! try this matt and let me know.. as far as putting your X in reverse and no reverse lights go on, that could be your transmission range sensor. there is a way to adjust. Try the torx screws and let me know, if not i can e-mail you the Ford CD file that shows you how to adjust the tranny range sensor..
tighening the torx screws made it better but did not correct the issue,
BUT I FINALLY FIXED IT!!!!
1st i replaced the shift cable and the 2 bushings around the shift tube, got ALOT better, but NOT fixed correctly!
then i replaced the entire shift tube assembly, the outer tube, the inner shaft, the lever that goes through it and the pin that holds the lever in place, now shifts PERFECT!! like brand new! i found out from a tech that the shift tube goes alot. i bought my truck with this problem, and the 2 torx screws on the bottom of the shift tube were half way out, so my thinking is the previous owner never came on FTE and never knew about the torx comming loose, and by never tightening them and always useing the shifter all ****ed up, it bent the shift tube. so if you find that your torx screws are or at sometime where loose, and the shifter is not right after you tighten them, replace the shift tube assembly.
