Hey guys, has anyone had their gershifter lever get sloppy and then difficult to get into gear? I only have 67000 miles on a 2000 f350 with a 5.4.......it seems strange that something like that would happen. Anyone know what i should do to fix it or should i just take it to the dealership.....yikes....i hate to if someone here knows something or had this happen to them. Let me know, thanks
I have not had this problem but if this is a typical cable style linkage then there will be an adjustment either at the transmission or under the dash near the firewall. There may also be a bracket on the firewall that has simply come loose.
I know what you mean. I test drove an 02 PSD that was used for plowing. It had about 50k miles on it and the shifter (auto) was super-loose. It almost fell into 1st gear. I could literally shift with 1 finger.
But someone told me that it's a pretty simple adjustment. But I'm not a mechanic. So simple to them is probably brain-surgery to me.
If it's loose it's not an adjustment. You have to check to see where the play is, I would suspect the shifter bushings in the column. If it's like the ford car's I work on there are 2 plastic bushings on the shifter tube that runs down the steering column, they wear out and sometimes even fall out of place.
i had the same problem with my 2000 sd and you adjust it on the side of the transmission. On the driverside of trans you will see where cable comes down from the firewall and hooks to trans with a two piece plastic clip that is adjustable. You will need to pull keeper clip off and slide bracket towards the back of the truck to tighten up shifter cable but it did throw my indicator off just a little bit, i havent figured out how to fix that one yet.........good luck
If it is like the Ranger column, I have replaced alot of the shifter tubes for the same problem. Where the shifter goes into the tube it wears the tube out.
Thanks fellas for all the input, i'll consider your recommendations. I did find the little roller wheel adjustment under the dash but all that did is adjust my indicator for p,r,n,d,2,1. I'll check out the adjustment someone here suggested by the trans tommorrow and see what i find out. I;ll let you know what happens.
I HAD TO REPLACE THE SHIFTER CABLE IN MY EXCURSION ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO. OOPS CAPS WAS ON. i had a lot of slop and then one day i couldn't move the shifter at all. it took about 10 minutes to completely replace and adjust the new cable. nice and smooth now.
At the bottom of the column the shift cable attaches to a lever on the shift tube. The Torx head screws that hold that on sometimes loosen off.
Hey man, you nailed it!! That was exactly the problem! Why those allen/hex screws would come loose is beyond me but i'm back to normal again. Thanks again for the help, Scott
