Over the past two weeks my trucks tranny has been acting weird. Every so often it takes a little bit to put into reverse (when going from drive, to neutral then to reverse). It goes right into reverse when u shift from Drive straight to reverse. The second problem that i have been having with the tranny is when its cold it doesnt shft into 1st manually (doesnt happen every time the tranny is cold but sometimes). The last problem also corresponds with the first one. When u put the truck into reverse going from drive, to neutral then to reverse, the back up lights dont turn on. Then when u put into into reverse from Drive straight to reverse or from Park to reverse, the reverse lights turn on. Also, the shifter is really loose. So what do u guys think? Is it the shifter or is the tranny headin south?
Matt, It is possible that your shifter tube & poly bushings are worn in your column. The tube OEM is cheap pot metal replacement is better metal if you order the better one.
This can cause you to to have linkage slop and be between gears P,R,N,D,L2,L1.
when you shift back & forth. Here in the shop we have replaced app. 6 in the last year.
Do you ever have problems removing your key? or starting/ no cranking?
I'm in a fleet shop and its about a 2hr. job to replace those parts.

no it removes and starts fine. My buddies think the tranny is going but it shifts perfectly through all the gears when in D. Also when the trannies going, doesnt the Overdrive light blink?
It also sounds like it could be your TR or transmission range sensor, I would take a good look at it first, it has many functions that are common to your symptoms.
Matt, The parts for the shifter tube cost about $100. Call your dealer.
I believe the group# / middle Ford# are 7212 for tube, 7L278 for bushings , 7C464 for rubber insulator and 7W441 for pin.
Double check for sure as these are for F150/250 column.
This can be done by yourself if you have the skill to do it. Lower column , pull off cover , locate tube , disconnect full shift tube assy (dont loose the spring on the center shaft its like a thrust spring and comes off when you pull assy.), swap center shaft (relube if dirty) to new tube, install new bushings, reassemble. There are a few connectors you have to remove & reinstall for OD connection on shifter arm and you might want to replace OD switch while there but not a big deal.
This is more related to fixing the loose shifter/reverse light problem.
However I am worried about how the lube shop changed out your tranny fluid.
There are 2 different pickup tubes/filter lengths in your Excursion.
One is for the 3 1/2" deep pan and the other is for the 4 3/4" deep pan.
If they put the wrong tube in and it dropped off (ITS A PUSH ON NOT BOLTED ON)
You might be pulling air in to valve body and having problems from that.
There is also the possibility of that happening with a transmission flush (back flush type) of fluid change where they don't remove the pan. They only hook up to cooler lines and give a fluid swap/transfusion. This was common on early GM push on filters and this burned up a few trannys in its time.
Or: Since most of the back flush machines are a low pressure swap you might have some debris stuck in the valve body that can be broken down with a conditioner. I've used one from NAPA called Lubegard 765-2601 NAPA part #.
Rokhedjo made a good point. check the electrical connections on your transmission to make sure the lube tech didn't bump a connector or plug a connector in wrong. (bending down one of the small spades or breaking off one of them)
Keep us updated , Good-luck Matt.
Rich.
