I have a Clifford RSX3.5. (Directed Electronics) It has a wait to start recognition for diesels and extended range. I've used it from over 300'. Also has a turbo cool down feature. A lot of programable features with this unit.
So far I really like it. Comes with a pager for the alarm mode and way more features then I will probably ever use. www.clifford.com
I got a Viper for Christmas but have not had it installed. You do have to get some sort of by pass module for it. It has turbo cool down mode. You can even program it to start every three hours and run for a certain amount of minutes (3 -20 I believe).
The by pass module is to hold the ignition key. Due to the system requiring the microchip in the key to be present for start, this is required in-line. I think it's pretty standrd in all the remote start set-ups today. At least I was lead to believe that by the guys at Z-Tech. It was include with mine. What's the range on the Viper?
Make sure to get one with a diesel glow plug delay timer. On the 03-up diesel Fords there is no wire to tap into for the wait to start light, so you have to use a timer.
If your 08 has the PATS key system you will have to get a bypass module for it (before 08 PATS was not available in the Super Duty, only the Excursion).
Other than that we need to know what kind of features you are looking for. Do you want an alarm? Do you want 2 way communication? Any other features?
I personally have an Auto Page RS1000 alarm/remote start system installed in my truck and I am very happy with it.
I got a CodeAlarm for mine. Mine is not Diesel, but it has the capability for the "pause" to account for the diesel. It's been great so far. Over a year, and it sure is nice getting into a pre-warmed or pre-cooled truck. I've been able to hit mine from about 400 feet so far. Haven't really tried to see how far it'll work, but objects in the way do play a factor...such as trees!
Mine is a Pursuit 700 series from Ziebart. I dropped $700 and don't even use the alarm portion, but it has a two-way remote and reaches over 1/2 mile easy. This is my third Ziebart install...they stand behind their work 100% (which is good because the starter messed my computer on an 03 Dodge. 20 second glowplug delay, turbo cool-down, timed start, periodic start, and engine temp on remote.
my dealer told me if i got an after market remote start it would void the warranty {not sure what part} is this true? or where they trying to force me into buying one from them?
They were trying to scare you into buying one from them. The only thing they could do is void the warranty on the electrical wiring that has to be tapped into. Or if you had some electrical problem that they could trace back to the wiring for the remote start, that would not be covered.
If you find a good installer you should never have any issues. Before you take it to them ask how they make their electrical connections. You want a place that knows to solder and tape up or use shrink tube on all of their connections, rather than places that use the simple T-taps or other clip on electrical connectors (these tend to cut wires along with the insulation, and are well known for causing issues later on when the wires start to break and short out).
