I am considering installing a remote start module on my truck and was wondering if anyone could recommend a brand. Also, what kind of modifications would have to be done to install one? I don't have any security system...heck, if you want to steal my truck, let me know and I'll send you my address and leave the keys in it!
Also, a bit off topic, I was going to get one for my girlfriend as well, she has a 98 or 99 Dodge Avenger, no security, but it is leased...anyone know what the implications of this mod on a leased vehicle is?
I've had good luck with Design Tech remote starters. One of them has been installed since late 94 and is still working fine. I seldom start my truck with the ignition switch anymore. Since you don't have a security system you won't need any special installation instructions.
I JUST had the DEI 552T remote starter with remote locks installed on my 97 F250. Circuit City did the install for me. I thought about doing it myself, especially after the sales guy told me there was no way the average joe could do it. Well after reading the book, he was almost right. The installation guru at the store took 4.5 hours. I could have done it myself, but it would have taken at least the weekend, and several trips aback and forth to the store! So for $70 more I let them do it. ANYWAY... I like the system so far, it has a 1000 ft range(!) 2 remotes, keyless entry, hood pin lockout to disable the ignition system should someone open the hood and a slew of dealer programmable features; like runtime after start, door lock when shifted into gear, etc... Overall a nice system. Can even be upgraded in the future to include an alarm system. Made by the same company that makes Viper and Python systems. Retails for like $100 without installation.
I like the Crimstopper 900ER. I have installed 2 of these systems, one in my bros SuperCoupe and one in my Cougar. I like this one because of the great range. It has longer range than any other unit I have used mainly because of the real antenna instead of just a wire.
I would put one in my F150 except it's a 5spd. (still workin on it)
If you get just the remote start it not all that hard. Most of the wires are at the base of the steering column. You do run some power wires directly to the battery. There's a wire going to the brake light switch. Another to a hood pin switch. One to the tach input (you don't have to have a tach). There's a manual cut off switch.
If you get one that is a keyless entry/alarm/remote starter, you have to hook up a lot more wires.
