temp gauge

my temp gauge seems to do whatever it wants. its not right so i thought i would pull the wire to the sensor but i cant get to it. the sensor wire cant be unpluged becouse there is no room. is there another way to check this? if i find it is bad whats the best way to change the sensor becouse it seems like i will have to remove alot of stuff.

I have a similar situation. I bought a '89 2.3 Ranger recently to use as a beater vehicle. Beater or not, I keep my vehicles in great mechanical condition. Well the previous owner neglected many things in this truck. One being the temp gauge not working. I never had a 4 cylinder or 6 in 31 years of driving so I'm new to the 2.3. I know where the temp sensor is supposed to be but with all the sh_t in the way, I can't get to it. Since the original owner never cleaned the engine either, it's a big greasy mess and evrything has the same black gritty/shiny look to it. If you have a 2.3 and find your sensor, let me know how you unearthed it. I'm not going to mess with my Ranger today. Maybe tomorrow I'll have time to look at it again.

Did you see my post in your other thread regarding the temp sender location?

It's on the block - drivers side rear...not at the back of the block, not in the head.

Above and slightly to the rear of the temp sender, is the oil sender = in the head.

Bill,
Thanks, I'll look there tomorrow. Is it like the V8 type sensors. Brass hex with a single wire connector sticking out?

Thanks,

Yes, in fact the same one (D0WY-10884-A - Motorcraft SW-924) fits 100's of applications, beginning in 1970 on: F Series trucks, Rangers, Bronco's I & II, Mustangs, Torino's, Fairmont's...you name it.

Oh *****, sorry. I was poking through 5 threads on the issue and tried to find the one that the image pertained to. I was reading your first post and did not see that later you posted you had a 4.0. In case you ever have a 2.3 no you know :-)

This information would have been useful in your original post, along with the year of the truck. Is not the sender in the front of the engine intake manifold? It shouldn't be that difficult. jd
