weight experiment

Since ye' olde ranger has broken down, I've given in and bought a new (1/2 ton) truck.

So, I was thinking, if I've got to take the bed off of the truck to replace the fuel pump...why stop there?

I suppose it'd just be an experiment to find out what the best gas mileage/off-road handling could be with weight reduction.

I guess what I'm wondering is...

How would I be able to estimate the weight reduction by removing both doors (reg. cab), the bed, and other items from the truck?

Since 4 guys can easily lift off the bed, I would think it would weigh less then 225 pounds. The doors have a beam in the side for safety so a door might weight 80-100 pounds each. As a rule of thumb every 100 pounds you remove from a vehicle can increase MPG about 0.10 So removing the bed and doors would increase your MPG around 0.30 to 0.40 mpg. To me that is hardly worth the compromise in hauling something in the bed and having the added safey of doors. But then, it is your truck, so do what you have to do, that's what makes all of us a little different from each other.

After removing all of that it would make a good baja truck on the dunes.
