Coolant temp sensor issue

I just replaced both temp sensors in hopes to get my temp gauge to work. However that didn't fix it. I tried to clean the single wire connection but that didn't help either.

So is there a way to test the gauge and the connection? Also how does the sensor work, ohms?

The way I was told to test the guage on my '89 was to ground the wire connector to the block and have someone watch the guage. If the guage moves from cold to hot when the connector is grounded, then the guage is OK and the sensor is defective. If nothing happens then either the guage or the wiring is at fault .

I'll have to check that next time I have a buddy around. Can you replace just the gauge? or is it the whole cluster that needs to be swapped out?

I don't know the answer to that one. When I grounded the sensor wire the guage pegged on hot so the guage was good but the sensor was bad. Replaced it and all was well.

I have just the opposite problem... i ground it and nothing happens. So either wire or gauges is bad... not sure where to go from here. Start chasing wires I guess.
