I am currently working on a 1987 Toyota 4Runner that I swindled for free from my brother. When I received it, it would not run it would just crank but wouldn't start. So I replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, TPS, cap, rotor, plugs, wires and getting ready to replace all the vaccume line. The timing has been checked and codes have been pulled and cleared. I currently have the intake manifold off of it cleaning all the carbon out of it. Also while the intake is off I am going to pull and clean the injectors. This is my winter project and I can't wait to get it running so I can put some time into the "fun" stuff such as: lift, interior mods and exterior mods. This is my Non-Ford project and I will keep you all updated. And I would also like to add that I AM STILL A FORD MAN this is just meerly a project vehicle or a "toy" if you will.
I had an 86 once as well and blew the head gasket out of it and sold the truck and all for $300.00. My wife was going to school and we needed the money.
P.S. If any of you hear of a 86-89 22re 4Runner or truck (running or not) let me know. I need a parts vehicle.
Cleaned up the engine a bit and now i am waiting for parts to get the injectors back in then I am going to bolt everything back together and see what I got. Aparently the hole isn't big deal so I am not going to worry about it much. I might pull off the lower intake manifold ports to see what it really is for future reference.
Got new o-rings on the injectors and got the fuel rail installed now I am waiting on a thermostat so I can get the upper intake installed. I am beginning to think that it is timing that I am fighting so after I get it all put back together and it still won't run i guess I will tear into the front of the engine to get to the timing chain .
I finally made it out to work on the ol' Yoda last night pulled the radiator, fan and bolted the intake back on. I also replaced all the vacuum lines. I am going to try to tear into the timing chain tonight to see if that is the problem or not. Those tension pullies are sonething eles on these things!
I have a 95 Corolla that is starting to squeal on either a belt or tensioner. I dread having to tear into it. Also, last night on the way home the CEL came on, so now something else. It had just turned over to 213K.

Have you changed the timing belt yet? If not it might be a good idea because once that belt breaks smashed valves are sure to come!

Doesn't matter, the 1.6 and 1.8 in the corolla for that year were non interference engines. even if the belt broke there would be no valve damage. Changing the belt is a fun experience though.
