Hood release cable broken

How can you open the hood of a 1988 F150/Bronco if the hood release cable is broken?

Never tried it on my personal truck, but on my work truck (05 Chevy- hey I didn't have a choice in the matter) I was able to use a long screwdriver through the grill to pop the hood latch open.

side note: also make sure you never accidentally close/lock the latch while the hood is up. it was a pain to pop back open

Take out the grille and then you will be able to easily get to the latch with a screwdriver.

If this happens, and your hook latch cable still works, just pull the hood release again ya' dummy

You may be able to grab the cable itself through the grill and pull on it, if the inner cable is broke the outer casing will slide off of it, then pull on the inner cable to open the hood.

You may have to push the outer cable end free of the bracket right next to the latch itself so it will slide off the inner cable so you can grab it. The end of the outer cable sits in a slot in that bracket, pushing it back toward the motor and slightly up should do it.

If you can't get it post back and I'll walk out back and open the hood on my 87 and see exactly what it will take to do it. (I can open the hood for a closer look)

Good luck removing the grille with the hood shut. That's why the long screwdriver is key

I noticed that everybody who questioned my post here owns 92-96 trucks. Maybe this is true for your trucks, but not for ours. Note he has an 88. I have a 91. The only thing under the hood that is holding the grille is a few of those little plastic clips with the plastic screws that wedge inside, if they are even still there. Release the grille clips (big plastic ones, 2 each side, inside the grille) and pull the bottom of the grille out and then pull down. It will pull right out of those little plastic screw things.

The answer to your next question is yes I have done this myself.

I had thought about trying to remove the grill. I noticed that there are supposed to be 4 black push pin plastic screw things (they have a phillips head on them, but don't really screw out) holding the grill from the front. 3 of mine are missing, so I think I'll pop the 4th one out then do as you said and try to pull the grill out and down. I assumed there must be something holding it in under the hood, but didn't want to break it, but I'll give it a try because I just can't get my hand in there far enough to grab the cable and pull it out to pop the hood with the grill in. Will let you know how it goes.

I removed the remaining forward facing push pin and was able to pull the grill out a bit and down, but since I have a plow on the truck I didn't have much room and couldn't get it actually out of there. But I got it down enough so the I could slip a hack saw blade in and cut each of the top mounted push pins in half one at a time. It worked enough that I got the cable and was able to pull it and open the hood. Thanks all.

No no no no, it doesn't work like that, haha. I had to reach through the grill, and unbolt the hood latch. My wrists looked like I had been cutting them for years, since the back of the grill is suprisingly sharp! I will NEVER make that mistake again, it only took once for me to learn that one.
