won't start below 50 degrees

A buddies 03 7.3 is giving him problems. It absolutely won't start when it's below like 50 degrees outside. If you spin it over for a while it'll start puffing white smoke out the exhaust. You can plug it up so the block heater is warming it and after it's been plugged in it'll fire right up. Also you can hit it just barely with a tiny shot of ether and it fires right up also. Does this sound like glow plug relay? If so where is it located and how would I test it? I checked NAPA and they are $153 so I think I'd better test it before replacing it.

thanks

Mark

well, personally, I'd rather you got out a test light and a voltmeter before you threw parts, but yeah, it's a very possible cause...

I have both, but what do I probe and what should it read if the relay is good?

International sells the bare relay for 30$, up here by me anyways. Part number on the box is 1831646c1. Cheap enough to keep a spare in the glovebox.

Did you know about Guzzle92 and his HUGE glow plug relay mod?
I would give you a link, but my main computer died and I'm using a backup right now and don't have it. His write-up is in his signature, do a search for him.
