I just upgraded to the Stancor 586-902 Glow Plug Relay and it's beefier than what I imagined from reading about others doing this mod. It's massive, has a 600 amp inrush rating and dwarfs the itty-bitty NAPA 109 I had there before. When holding one in each hand, it's like a grape vs. a grapefruit!
Here is my little writeup on the change-out. I have to say that I think it is well worth the $43 with the quantity of GPR problems we see in the winter.
Me too, especially since I just put in a GP-109. I am still thinking about taking it out and putting in the OEM one I have, but damn. If I take it out, one of those is going in!!
Great write up again. I have a couple of those relays laying around from when i did car stereo competitions. Mine are made by stinger but are the same size and shape and are the 200 amp relays. I will swape mine out and see how it works even though i replaced my gpr about a month ago with a 60 dollar oem one.
Wow do you have some sort of photo editing software that automatically crops out dirt and dust from the picture? That engine compartment is extremely clean!
what are the added benefits of this relay besides durability? sure looks like its built to last compared to the gpr-109.
My guess would be that that's about it, just a beefier GPR. The coil only draws about 1.6 amps while energized which is about what the 109 pulls and I'm just hoping for longer life.
This contactor has been around for years and I have read about PSD owners using it for more than 4 years now on both idi and di engines. I have not read any postings on failures of the Stanton so I figured .... Why not?
I can hear my 109 hum when I turn the key and a definate click when it shuts down. It shuts down just a few seconds after my WTS light shuts off (of corse I'm talking cold start).
