I have a 94 f150 4x4 with e4od. The trasmission started to shift hard in every gear. The first to second shift would just about give you whiplash. Had no codes and no flashing OD light. If I reset the computer it would drive ok then start shifting hard after about 20-30 miles. figured it must be a sensor so I checked all the connections under the hood, cleaned with contact cleaner and applied silicone grease. This time I got a tps code (low output) and cel. Replaced the tps and everything was fine for about 100 miles. Now the hard shifting is back, no codes and no lights. Anyone have any ideas?
This could be the computer telling the pump to boost pressure as a "bandaid" to compensate for slipping clutches or converter. My 94 F250 E4OD did this. Harsh shifts that would sometimes go away for a week or two and then come back.
If the tranny is slipping it may be overheating the fluid which will lead to eventual failure.
As a minimum I would check fluid smell and color. Probably drop the pan and check for particles. the longer a slippage goes, the more damage occurs so it would be worthwhile to figure this out soon.
It might be something else, maybe one of the sensors, I think you did the TPS. Some of the guys can spell out which other ones are worth a look.
If the tranny has well over 100K miles on it, it may be in need of a rebuild. Pre 95 E4ODs had weak spots such as the converter clutch and a few other things that were upgraded in 95 and newer.
Jim, Looks like I may have a code after all. code 628 conveter slippage. I knew it was starting to shudder somewhat. Now the question is how much money do I want to put into it.
Yeah torque shudder is the classic symptom. If you let it go too long it will over heat your seals which will cause garbage to circulate in the tranny and start to take hard parts out. It takes a few months before the damage is "terminal".
Mine didn't even throw a code before I took mine in to see why it was bang shifting.
My rebuild with uprated components and I told the shop I wanted it bullet proof for towing, cost about $2500 back around 1998. Needed uprated converter, clutches Sun Shell and I think a valve body.
You can buy rebuilts cheaper but be careful about too cheap.
the biggest question is how much money do I want to put into a 13 year old truck that is beginning to show its age. I just replaced the radiator support due to rust and the bed is starting to show. In 5 years I've only put 13k on it. I never got it to be a daily driver and now that I have changed jobs I need to drive it more. Decisions, decisions.
Dude,
I am in the same boat almost exactly except mine also shifts in and out of overdrive above 40mph....I shift hard 1-2 and 3-4....if I let off the throttle quickly in OD is jerks....
replaced FIPL, RPM sensor, front seal, fluid change, Converter and front bushing....yet nothing has helped....should have just rebuilt it....or gone to a ZF-5....???
At this time I have done nothing except put in some shudder stop. It has stopped the hard shifting and shuddering for now. I know it is a bandaid, but I do not have the funds right now to fix it and I only drive the truck around 10 - 20 miles a week. If it hangs in there till I can fix it I will definitely do the job right.
