I have a 1992 250 w/ E4OD. A few days ago it started shifting hard, going into gears sporadically. The rpms would show going down when accelerating and would not go into OD. I installed a new TPS today. It shifts now, but it takes long to go into 3rd, shifts hard from 1-2 and won't shift into OD. And now the tach doesn't show any rpms at all. Is there any way to adjust the TPS?
sounds like a tach sensor not a tps. but yes you can adjust the tps. loosen the two screws and rotate slightly. put a multimeter on it and tighten back up when it is in range. The tach sensor is the silver 1 inch nut on the driver side of the IP. It is a dealer only part and about $80. Is your OD light blinking?
The e4od requires the tach sensor to be working properly. There are some good threads on here about adjusting your TPS. TPS voltage at idle should be .96 - 1.2 volts and at wide open throttle it should be 3.85 to 4.0 volts although I've never been able to get mine above 3.65 at wide open throttle. To adjust it you will need the key on and engine off. There are three wires running into your TPS. The top wire is your ground, no volts, the bottom wire is your constant, should be right around 5 volts. The center wire is the one that you need to check when adjusting. With the key on, engine off, and the throttle at idle use a volt meter to check the center wire. Loosen the two screws to rotate the TPS so that it is within range at idle. Then slowly move your throttle to wide open and check to see that the voltage steadily increases to within range at wide open throttle. Getting it adjusted just right can be a science. The higher you have your TPS voltage set, the firmer your shifts will be.
