Transmission started not up shifting from 1st to 2nd. then after it shifted it went back into first (making me kiss windshield!!) when stopped and started again it shifted normal. then a few minutes later it was shifting hard all gears. Then all was fine again. called dealership they said it may be shift solinoid pack. Does this sound right?? Any help would be appericiated. Truck is parked till I figure it out.

HELP HELP!!! virtually the same problem at 170000 miles!! except mine does it from 1st to 2nd only. seems to (only sometimes) hold 1st gear too long. once it shifts though it seems to do okay from there on out. where is this shift solenoid located and how much are they? And, i like you, do not have any SES light or trouble codes. If anyone could help us out it would be appreciated. thanks in advance!!!
solinoid pack is above the filter. I will drop pan tomorrow and have a look. dealer price for part is $435 plus oil and filter. Unless I get any advice I will check pan for debris and if it looks good ill spend money on part and hope for the best.
let me know what you find, i am dropping my pan thursday night. i will also call powerstrokeshop.com tomorrow and get a quote from bob baumann. he is the cheapest dealer in the USA on oem PSD parts.
1998 was the last year for the E4OD. It's a 4R100.
And since it's a 2001, the problem is the mechanical diode. It's failed. The trans needs to come out and be rebuilt or replaced. Do a search on mechanical diode and you'll find A LOT of reading.
okay... i called in my VIN today for the same vehicle and mine is a 4R100. Bob Baumann at powerstrokeshop.com will tell you by your VIN # exactly what yours is. Also, i ordered a shifter solenoid pck from him, and its an OEM Ford part, and got it shipped to my door (be here Friday) for $190.00. I have read many threads about the mechanical Diode and hoipe thats not what it is. I called NADP (North American Diesel PErformance) and they said to change the filter and fluid and use a few bottles of Lucas Tranny fix. They said if its the solenoid sticking the Lucas will clear it right up. If its the mechanical diode, pull the tranny and have it built, the lucas wonbt do anything. SO...........i think i will be returning the shifter solenoid pack, saying a prayer and changing the filter and fluid and using the lucas. if that doesnt touch it then, hello new tranny and goodbye $1,800.00!!!!
Mine is still an E4OD. instead of droppig pan I am having dealer run a diagnostic first. Cant get it in till saturday. Cost is $99 but at this point i dint know if its mechanical diode or shift solinoid pack. I tried looking to see if the E4od is similar to the 4r100 in the diode department but everytime i look up E4OD I get linked to 4R100. Are they very close? or same?
E4OD never had the mechanical diode because the only year the mechanical diode was used was 2001 and the last E4OD was built in 1998.
The E4OD and 4R100 are similar. If you have an E4OD in a 2001 truck it means someone replaced the 4R100 with an older trans. Nobody is going to know what's in that old thing.
HINT: If you really have a 2001 and it has a problem with the 1-2 shift IT IS NOT THE SOLENOIDS, IT IS THE MECHANICAL DIODE!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok It Must Be An 4r100 But The F@&&in Dealer Ran The Tranny Code And Said It Was An E40d!! I See Here That You Are Right And He Was Wrong. Thanks For Helping.
