Thumbs up 5.4 X

I just bought a 5.4 X with 4.10 gears and I am very satisfied with its performance. I do not tow. I only bought it as a large vehicle to haul the family around. It has 152,000 miles on it and I paid $5500 for it. I had to put new ball joints in right away, but I feel I got a good deal considering they were asking $7000. I love my X! now is the time to customize it a bit. Has anyone used a tuner/programmer on their 5.4? Which brands do you recommend? Plans include K&N CAI,Magnaflo cat-back exhaust, and just a few visual items.

There's not much experience (or respect for) the 5.4 on the X forum. You'll probably have better luck in the modular V8 forum.

You'll love your truck, even if you don't do any engine mods. I use mine the same way you do and the 5.4 gets the job done just fine. I've towed about 6000 pounds a few times and it was no problem here in the flat-lands (the hills might be another story!).

5.4 would be cheaper to rebuild since it has less cylinders

BUT LEAST IT SOUNDS BETTER THAN THE 6.8

omg sorry just realised i'm shouting tonight , stopping now.
i have heard the 5.4 does actually less mpg than the V10 only a small amount so dont worry there (unless your travelling '000's of miles)

otherwise if your happy ,then drive , drive , drive....

in the V10 we would be filling up between drive & drive

keep it standard , its quite a good engine anyway (from what i have read), i think from what your asking , cat back , K & N filter you'd stay very similar to what your getting now in terms of mpg.

but if its performance your after , then i'm sure someone will say something much more helpfull

The 5.4s do have much less resale value - so if you buy one, make sure it's a really awesome deal. I also believe that limits you to 4x2s, all 4x4s I believe came with the V10. If you only need a 4x2 that's fine.
I currently have a 2000 excursion with a 5.4 L and it’s 4x4 so they definitely come with that option

In my opinion it depends on what you want. I love our PSD and will not trade it for anything, wife would beat me to a pulp. We have friends who love their 5.4 Ex and have several 100,000 miles on it. After almost two decades of hauling kids in it, the interior was shredded. They recently ripped out seats etc and converted it to a cargo/work vehicle. Still going.
