5.4L in an Excursion - good enough?
5.4L in an Excursion - good enough?
In my continued quest to acquire a gas Excursion, I have come across some nice ones with the 5.4L motor. Is that enough to power this beast down the road? I do not plan on doing any towing, I have my PS truck for that. I just don't want an under-performing motor.

As has been said, the 5.4 isn't going to make a significant fuel economy improvement, but it will have a significant decrease in horsepower. If you aren't doing any towing with it it will probably be sufficient, but you will probably wish you had more horsepower.
The 5.4s do have much less resale value - so if you buy one, make sure it's a really awesome deal. I also believe that limits you to 4x2s, all 4x4s I believe came with the V10. If you only need a 4x2 that's fine.

I stand correct.
I have never seen an XLS Excursion, and very few XLTs. The vast majority of the ones I see are Limiteds, but maybe that's just where I travel?
My cousin is on his second Excursion, both Limiteds. They bought a '99 or '00 (can't remember which) when they first came out, and then bought a 2005 when they heard that the things were going out of production. They're planning on driving this one into the ground.

Diesel, Diesel, Diesel.........! But if it must be gas job then my vote is for the 10 cyl. The 5.4 is great engine but not for a truck with a curb weight of 7,000 lbs. Keep that for the toy trucks or the light duty vans. I still think that you should reconsider the diesel because you allready know what a great truck it is and will want to keep it for a long time !!! Good Luck.
I have an 01 Ex Limited with a 5.4 that has been to the top of Pikes Peak and the top of Mt. Washington, NH. I have also made a 14,749 mile round trip from SC to Alaska. The truck has plenty of power for this kind of traveling. I love it. I have also towed a few trailers loaded with firewood and the truck didn't even know it had anything behind it. I say go for it if you aren't going to do any heavy duty towing.
