I have been driving 5.4L F150 Supercrews for about 10 years and don't really need the cargo box anymore---thinking of maybe an Excursion or Expedition next time around.
Questions:
Do the Excursions get the same or worse gas mileage (assuming no passengers) ?
With a 5.4L motor, is the towing capacity as good? I drag a 19' boat.
Are there other major mechanical differences, or basically the same thing as an F150 with seats in the back instead of a cargo box?
We do a lot of highway miles between Canada and Florida, and the F150 even with a rigid box cover doesn't keep the cargo 100% dry.
the expedition is the suv version of the f-150. the excursion is basicly a super duty f-250. so the differances are major.
the 2V 5.4 in the excursions have a hard enough time getting themselves going let alone a trailer.
i'd suggest looking at V10 excursions. milage will be worse, 8-10 city and 10-14 highway. also newer expeditions as they will remind you of your f-150 more.
Id say get the v-10.. Ive heard alotta ppl with 5.4s in their excur claim that they get something like only 1 mpg better then a v10.. The 5.4 in the excur is a 2v. Your F150 5.4 is a 3v. So you probally wont be to excited with the performance of a 5.4 excursion.
The best gas milage I get on the highway with my V-10 is 13 mpg.... alot worse than a F-150. It depends on towing, if the 5.4 can do it then I would go with a Expedition, a little better mileage. But if you dont mind the gas $$$ then go for the Excursion. My X is not a daily driver. As the mechanics the X's are known for lousy ball joints and if you buy one with the factory ball joints they are either bad or on their way out. My X is going in wed to get new ball joints put in.
not for nothing but i wouldnt tow a freekin jetski with a expedition. my brandnew 2003 5.4 expedition had only 9000 miles on it and left me stranded in tennesee with my little 19'speedboat (only 2500 lbs). It had blown the transmission. smoked the overdrive. go excursion all the way. i understand they recommend not to tow in overdrive but it was flat open hwy the whole way down at about 75 mph it felt better with the overdrive on since it was hardly working at all. dumped that thing quick.
As already noted...HUGE differences between an Ex and F150/Expy...
Biggest difference is the INSIDE DRY storage and PEOPLE area in addition to the stout towing performance.
As stated...the Ex is based on the F250 platform and is much HEAVIER on the hoof than an F150/Expy platform...the Ex rolls down the road at near 4 tons with people...so moving that much alone with the 5.4L is a chore...let alone drop an additional 500-800#'s of tongue weight AND the weight of the boat and associated wind drag...the 5.4L will be huffing since it is only a 2V with 4R100 trans even with the 4.10 gears...the V10 will get near the same mpgs...which BTW will stink regardless...but look at what this motor does...and it does it well so I don't gripe...if mpgs is your concern...I'd say get a Prius (grin)...these are beasts of vehicles that can do amazing things...really...

YIKES!!! Unless I'm in the mountains or the tranny is jumping in & out of OD (VERY rare) I tow with OD every time. I'm a diesel fan, but finding an Ex with the 7.3 is getting pretty tough. No, you can't have mine! I picked mine up about 30 miles from Spokane, WA and drove it through the mountains and heavy winds @ 75ish, 1000 mile roadtrip, and still got a bit over 17mpg. Without the wind and 68-70mph, I would probably have been 19ish.
How much space do you need? Maybe instead of an Excursion or Expedition you could get a topper? No tonneau or topper will seal 100% though, buy my UnderCover kept everything super dry when I drove from CO to MD with rain 2/3 of that drive. But I spent time doing my best to get that cover's sealing strips just right... but it was worth it.
Towing just a 19ft boat shouldn't pose a problem with either the new Expy or the Excursions. I towed various toys with a 99, 03 and an 07 Expy - the 07 was by far the best with the most power, the 6spd trans and rode fantastic. It also got 14-15 around town and 18-20 on the highway if I kept it under 75. When I got the heavier boat I needed more towing capacity and looked for the Ex but still miss a lot of things about the Expy.
i dont miss the expediton at all. biggest pos i ever had. Asside from the transmission.. also at 2500 miles it left me stranded with a dead alternator, The sunroof leaked, From day 1 the front differential had some problems running in 2wd and noone knew how to fix it. I did the research found the problem with some clutch spring crap and the dealer had it for a month to fix it. A/C compressor would bang and dealer said its normal then that stopped working. Rear DVD quit too as a result of water from sun roof. Im getting all worked up again.. man, i hated that thing....
