engine? trans? SLAM! at highway speed.

95 F250 powerstroke with auto trans. truck SLAMS every once in a while. the last four times have been on the highway. sometimes right after I've gone 1/2 mile, sometimes as much as 5 miles. sometimes it doesn't do it at all. So far it has only done it once per trip (once after an engine start). At first it was just a pause, like a miss or the engine shut off, or maybe a trans shift issue but now it is a hard hit. It's so fast and hard it's not obvious what it might be. Hits so hard I'm afraid to drive it. If it hits any harder it might cause a crash. Took it to a trans shop and they looked for codes but found none, and had not heard of anything like this.
Something is going to break soon, I can't imagine it holding together through too many more of these "events".

Any ideas out there?

From this description it could be a cam sensor cause the engine to cut out momentarily. pretty common. but then the slamming deal sounds a bit different. I would try a cam sensor first as you need a spare anyway and they are now very cheap. even though your truck is a 95 you can use the 97-03 sensor. here is a link to it. and if you get it at your local ford order the part number not by application cause they don't know the new sensor will fit the old trucks

It might help to know how many miles are on the truck and the tranny. Has any service work been done, perhaps fluid change in the rear dif without any fiction additive for the LS. Tranny service? Have you notice if it occurs when you let off the fuel?

Before my BTS I would stall the truck on occasion. I think it was due to the center carrier in the tranny being destroyed in the tranny.

Any additional info could help.

normally the cut out from a cps leaves a p0340, an all out no start sets a p0340 p0344 combo, but its a good start, if that aint it check the uvc's for a potential meltdown,

Joe its been my experience that CPS failure only leave codes about 25% of the time.

Thanks....

Thanks, I'll swap the cam sensor tonight. I had heard they were prone to failure so a new one would be wise either way.

Little more info on the truck...
It has 195,000 miles on it. I had the transmission rebuilt (and upgraded/updated) at 155,000, so there is about 40k on the trans. I don't think I have an issue with the rear differential, but was planning to pull the cover and take a look just to be sure (it's an open diff).

I have been wondering about the issue being an engine cut out.... I had the rear diff cover off a few months ago (I had to put a used rear axle under the truck and had the cover off to change the fluid) and noticed a lot of slop between the spider gears and the carrier. This results in what looks like a lot of backlash if I rotated the pinion back and forth. I was thinking last night maybe an engine cut out could cause the "backlash" to cause the slam.

That being said.... I think I'll do some checking and see if I can get a set of spider gears to correct that while I have the cover off.

Thanks again for the ideas...

Do your self a favor and buy 2 CPS's, keep one in the glove box. They can fail without warning and leave you stranded. Be sure to folow Tim's link, you'll get the best price there or at a ford dealer if you're in a hurry. Tell them you have a 97 or the price jumps up to ~$150

Have a look at the speed sensor for the transmission. Sometimes they read no speed at all and that will cause the computer to downshift the trans to first gear. As soon as the speed changes the sensor will come back to life and the trans will shift to the propor gear.

Cam Position Sensor. That was it! Took me longer to find my 10mm wrench than it did to swap in the new part. Thanks a ton for the link, and the heads up on the cheaper sensor. Saved me $$$.
I'm pretty sure the SLAM was due to my sloppy diff. - I'll be replacing the spider gears next.

Only down side is, my wife is pissed. Since I saw tjbeggs crew cab at silver lake (we used to go there all the time before I moved to KC) I've been talking about selling my 2wd extra cab and getting a 4wd crew cab. She thinks I'm nuts. And as usual, she's right.

thanks again.

Good to hear that your fixed!! tell you wife she is the one thats nuts!! I love my Crew cab! Well except when parking it in small places and framing it out on the dunes! but other than that she will love a crew cab! Besides last time I was in KC it was covered in 2 inches of ice. that was when I went to get my truck in Missouri last december when you guys got hammered with that ice/snow storm.
