Closer to the subject of future enhancements, I am wondering what Ford will do to get more economy out of the V10. Chevy Will soon have Displacement on Demand(DOD) for both the 6.0 and 8.1. This should really boost milage numbers unloaded. With the old pushrod technology it makes it easy for chevy to do this. Ford would have to go to camless technology for this to work and I am not sure that the firiing order of the V10 would accept this type of technology. It's easy for them to pull more power. It's the fuel milage I am worried about.
As for chevy's durability I grew up with chevys on a farm and never had problems with the old ones. 350, granny low,, You could beat the #@#%$ out of them and they would take it. The newer ones however are Crap.. Chevy has traded dependability for cost profitability whatever. They brag about there strong stiff frames. They have to be to keep the tin can bolted on top from rattling loose. My dad's 99 chevy has had these problems, Master cylinder, Leaking manifolds, Leaking coolant manifolds, starter, air conditioner, radiator, I know there's more but can't remember everything??? Also it rattles and squeaks all over.
I myself have been a ford convert for many years now thank goodness...

Believe it or not I got 10.2 mpg towing my 24' camping trailer this weekend. 70-75 mph with 8 people and all their gear for three days of camping plus all the teams gear for the three day soccer tournament we went to. I-5 Portland Or to Bellingham Wa, up hills, around town, 6 traffic jams (Seattle was rated #3 as the most traffic congested city in the U.S. recently). So I certainly can't complain about the mileage. Heck my 460 3/4 ton 4WD 1989 pickup could barely get that solo. And I CAN get 15 if I drive like I'm sane (too hard to do with all that HP and torque though). So my normal mpg is 14-ish. Which aint bad for 3 tons of vehicle, and it's AWESOME for 12,000 pounds and 45 feet at 70+ mph.
hey everybody i just like to add my comments on the subject. i gotta say that i don't let any of those chevy guys put down the v-10 its a hell of a motor smooth and powerful. the chevy guys always talk about towing but none of them around here pull anything more than 10000lbs, thats nothing my brother has a 99 v-10 and we pull our john deere 555G highlift around with it, it weighs 21000lbs! our trailor weighs 7000lbs you do the math i think thats a whole hell of a lot more than the average guy pulls and the v-10 handles it nicely. power has never been a problem its always traction and stopping thats the problem, we've never had a place we couldn't pull it because of lack of power always had plenty, its traction we run out of. anybody brags there truck to me i tell them to come on over and hook to our trailor loaded but there all to big of *****s, whenever i argue over pickups all i gotta do is bring up how are little v-10s pull our highlift around, heck i got a 95 460 and the v-10 woops a@@ against it not that the 460 ain't a hell of a motor cause it is but the v-10 blows it away. and i totally agree with you guys saying how most construction companies drive fords my dad's told me that for years to just watch when you go by a constructions site at how many fords you see its usually always more than half fords sometimes all fords thats cause ford just builds a heavy duty truck, shoot fords slogan says it all, "built ford tough"
Hey I know this topic is more about engines but way earlier in the discussion you were talking about the e450 and e550 platforms.
I'm pretty sure the ford isn't going to be building the e550 platform anymore
I can't wait to upgrade my 82 e350 460 to a newer 450 or 550 with a v10. Actually wouldn't mind a 7.3 diesel if I could find one for a good price.
I actually saw 2 chevy rv's the other day one A and one C. Most of the new ones I see that are gas are fords with v10's.
Does anyone have an idea why they build RV's on E's instead of F's. I've always thought the F's were easier to work on but My 82' E350 isn't too bad to work on when you remove the doghouse.

It's because of the seat, pedals, engine, etc. placement. They're set much further ahead in the chassis in the E series than farther back like in the F series.
