egr valves are big problems too, i wont start bad mouthing the motor, i could describe every problem....worked on too many of them puppies. vgt is the variable geometry turbo. you have an electronicly controled valve in the turbo that directs oil flow to push or pull vanes inside the exhaust side of the turbo allowing it to be a large and a small turbo. think of it as having the .84 hosing on our trucks, the 1.0 and the 1.15 all at the same time and you can change to the .84 for taking off and switch to the 1.15 for top end power as well. probelm is those vanes stick closed causing overboost, or what your case sounds like is the vgt solonoid is sticking. the oil line coming form teh block to the turbo is coated chrome on the inside, that plating flakes off and gets lodged inside the vgt solonoid, most of the idiots left at the dealers just slap a new soloniod on rather than replace the stand pipe and the problem comes back
a slight peg is ok as long as it isnt staying there throughout the gears, the vgt is constantly changing the vanes open and closed so some pegs here and there are normal, its the constant high boost that is wrong. these engines have no wastegates to bleed boost, the only way is by opening the vanes to full and the "flutter" you get from them when under full load then off throttle is the emergency boost blow off....more comonly known as the egr valve
