I'm hoping someone here can help me with this. I have an '84 F150, 300 strait 6, with a 4spd granny gear, 4x4, hydraulic clutch. My clutch has started slipping badly, not starting, but when I'm already moving. I think part of this is that I have an opening in the bottom of the bellhousing where I can see the flywheel, I know that mud and oil and carp like that has been getting in there, especially four-wheeling. I have a new clutch (11in), but I need help getting it in. I'm 17, never done this, ahve a chiltons manual, but its very vauge. I may have access to air tools if I get lucky. For the most part I would be doing the job with jacks and kackstands. I have 33" tires and a small lift, so I have some room under there. If anyone knows how to do this, and easy way to do it, advice, or ANYTHING that may help, please respond or e-mail me at wrcguy02(No Email Addresses In Posts!).
Thank You,
Eric
Two things I can think of.
1. Find someone who has pulled a transmission before and see if they can help you.
2. Get a transmission jack! Those 4 speed granny trans are heavy. I recently put one in my truck, and the trans jack was mandatory. There is no way to lay under the truck and bench press that trans in place.
While you have the trans out, look for oils leaks. It's posible that the rear seal has leaked and contaminated the clutch, causing the slippage. Inspect the flywheel and have it turned if there is any signs of wear.
Eric, I put a new clutch in my 71 F-100 4x4 about 3 years ago. It was easier to pull the motor than to pull the tranny and (married) transfer case out from underneath. This made it easier to do the new rear seal and clutch job.Plus if the motor needs any other work, oil pan seal, oil pump, new pilot bearing etc., this was a good time to do that.Make sure you get a heavy duty engine hoist as these 6 cyl. engines are heavy and must be lifted quite high to clear the front of your truck when removing-installing the engine. As the previous poster noted, get all the knowlegable help you can get. Good luck.
"bowties in the rearview mirror"
I did my first clutch at 16 on the side of the road (fortunately it was a light tranny!!) main thing is to pay attention to ow it comes apart. TIghten pressure plate evenly and use alignment tool. Good luck!!
