This was brought up in one of my other threads, but I wanted to poll everyones opinions. I have heard a few opinions from both sides, but what do you guys say. Will this harm your motor? If so what will it damage?
I have used it on my truck before I think it will hurt if used all the time or using too much at one time dry out the cylinders bad for the rings but sure can get you out of a jam at times
In my opinion starting fluid is bad for your engine if your glow plug system is working. I have heard that it can cause damage to the rods if you use to much. The glow plugs will ignite the starting fluid no mater where the pistons are. You should use WD-40 instead.
I have not used it in the PSD but have used it on a volkswagon that had 2 of the 4 glowplugs that went south. Before I used it, I dissconnected the glow plugs power source and had a 2nd person that sprayed starter fluid in the engine while cranking the engine. Trying to spray starter fluid in an engine by oneself and then turn it over has lead to locking the engine cause it will load up the first cylinder that drew in the majority of the starting fluid. Usualy haveing to wait for some time to allow the starting fluid to dissapate.
IMO, its good for in a jam like you were in the bush 5 hours from home, not good for troubleshooting in the driveway.
well i have learned from this first hand. KNOW HOW TO USE IT THE RIGHT WAY! by the way it was before i knew alot about anything just being a kid. it can help if you really need it in, my book not good stuff just brakes things like PISTON RINGS. if you use it make sure someone is cranking the engine BEFORE you spray it in the intake. and never over do it bad things happen. thats my thoughs of course they have made the stuff alot weaker now but it can still brake stuff.
As said its bad if the glow plugs are able to work. Disable the glow plugs and have somebody start cranking then once its just cranking start spraying.
best bet is not at all but as said before the "official way" for a diesel of our breed is this, disconnect glow plug system, disconnect intercooler tube closest to the intake, while cranking spray in small spurts directly into intake passage
I've been told NEVER use starting fluid on our engines expecially if the glow plugs work. I was told to use WD-40 or soak a rag in gas and lay it over the intake and start on the gas fumes.
Wow wd-40 works? I will remember that, due you use it like starter fluid? i have used starter fluid in my psd once I was camping at about 9500 ft and thats was the only thing that got me started. I had someone start cranking and I just give it one little shot and it fired right off. when I got home it got new glow plugs and glow plug relay and it's been starting good ever seense.
P.S. The worst thing about that day was, all my family drive dogs (dodges) and they all started with out a problem.
