Another thought on the money saving idea...between the group of us we're all pretty mechanically inclined, and trannies don't take up much space.
I'd be up for a "group-tranny-rebuild-parts-swap" day, if planned correctly we could have all tools and a rebuild manual on hand that we should be able to follow.
I'm comfortable with all aspects of automotive work...except auto trannies. I rebuilt a C6 once, with a good manual to work from. It lasted 600 miles and then went out again. The tranny shop we took it to said that was pretty good, most people who rebuild tier own auto trannies without knowing what they're doing don't even get them out of the driveway. But since then I've always been a bit gun shy about them...too much to go wrong in there. It's not just a matter of swapping parts from one case to the other, all tolerances need to be checked and adjustments made as every case is machined a little bit differently. This is something we don't want to mess around with, it needs to be done right, or it'll be even more expensive later on and could even cost us a race.
The guy I know who does tranny work on the side will be back tomorrow, I was told a little while ago. I'll see if I can talk to him tomorrow after work.
I'm with you Dan. Auto Trannys are Kryptonite to a back yard shade tree mechanic.
BTW, I am not completely caught up on this discussion as the last page on this thread that I viewed never did completely open due to my limited internet speed (dial-up). I gave up and waited to see another page before attempting to get caught up, so please excuse me if I don't appear savvi in this discussion. I am only basing my reply on page 8.
Tim, I've tried to call you...I guess you can't get calls when you're online, eh? (Dang dial-up...too bad thay can't get out of the Stone Age up there, huh?)
I'm with Dan on this one. I rebuilt a transmission once. It worked better than expected. Great burners in second and third. Too bad it didn't last more than a couple thousand miles. I guess I had it set up for hard shifts and blew it's guts to he!! and back in those few miles it worked. ;-)
Autos are best set up exactly to spec by those that do them day in and day out imo.
Dan, I will be unreachable for the next few days. Long shift...
Anyway, I got your numbers and you've got mine. Probably talk with you on Saturday, unless I can figure a way to contact you sooner. I will be out of cell range and not able to use my home tele for a few.
